Marion Pope

1928 - 2025 Person Name: Marion Pope, b. 1928 Topics: Unity in Christ Paraphraser (English) of "오 소 서 (Come Now, O Prince of Peace)" in Lift Up Your Hearts Marion Pope was a Canadian United Church missionary who spent many years in Korea. She was highly influenced by the missiologist Katharine Hockin, also a United Church missionary who was one of the last western missionaries to leave China after the founding of the People's Republic. Marion was deeply dedicated to expressing the gospel in the cultural context in which it was immersed. Turton, W. H., a Lieut. in the Royal Engineers, has published A Few Hymns written by A Layman between the Festivals of All Saints, 1880 and 1881. This contains 12 hymns. The Second Series, "written between the Festivals of All Saints, 1881 and 1882," also contains 12 hymns, and the Third Series, 1882-1883, another 12. These hymns are worthy of attention. Those which have passed into common use include;— 1. And now our Eucharist is o'er (1881-1882). Holy Communion. 2. 0 Thou who at Thy Eucharist didst pray. For Unity. "This hymn was used at S. Mary Magdalene's, Munster Square, N. W., in the Anniversary Service of the English Church Union, June 22,1881. It is intended to be sung after the ‘Agnus Dei,' at a choral celebration." In the 1889 Supplemental Hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern it reads "Thou, Who at Thy first Eucharist didst pray." "This hymn was used at S. Mary Magdalene's, Munster Square, N. Fred Bock

1939 - 1998 Person Name: Fred Bock, 1939- Topics: Jesus Christ Unity in Arranger of "SYMPHONY" in The Book of Praise Fred Bock was born in Great Neck, New York. He played the piano at age six and organ at age twelve. He attended Ithaca College, receiving his B.A. in Music Education. He earned his Masters and did Doctoral work in Church Music at the University of Southern California. Fred Bock was one of the most recognized and respected leaders in the world of church music. He was an accomplished composer, arranger, clinician, studio musician, organist, pianist, choral director and music publisher. He was the founder and director of publications for the music publishing division of Word, Inc. and later started Gentry Publication and other publishers of church music. He was also minister of music at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he served for 18 years. Before that, he served as minister of music at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles for 14 years. Andrew Donaldson

b. 1951 Person Name: Andrew Donaldson, 1951- Topics: Jesus Christ Unity in Arranger of "LINSTEAD" in The Book of Praise Andrew Donaldson, a composer and church musician, grew up in northern Ontario, Canada. He attended Glendon College, York University in Toronto, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He went on to study classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving its ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory Teachers) degree in 1979. Since then he has worked as a composer and performer in many contexts, in both French and English. Andrew co-edited the Book of Praise (1997), Presbyterian Church in Canada, with Donald Anderson. Their company, Binary Editions, continues to administer copyright for the PCC. In 2007 he was made a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by Knox College of the University of Toronto, for his body of work in congregational song in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. He had great success as an illustrator, but when his eyesight began to fail, he turned to writing books and plays. He wrote 80 books during his lifetime. He often seemed to fall afoul of the censors, though, for religious and political reasons. A committed socialist and pacifist, in 1907, he helped found the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage. He was also an honorary associate of the Women Writers’ Suffrage League.
