He Stood before the Court

Author: Christopher M. Idle, b. 1838 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 He stood before the court On trial instead of us; He met its pow'r to hurt, Condemned to face the cross -- Our King, accused of treachery; Our God, abused for blasphemy! 2 These are the crimes that tell The tale of human guilt; Our sins, our death, our hell -- On these the case is built. To this world's pow'rs the Lord stays dumb. The guilt is ours, no answers come. 3 The sentence must be passed, The unknown pris'ner killed; The price is paid at last, The law of God fulfilled. He takes our blame, and from that day Th' accuser's claim is wiped away. 4 Shall we be judged and tried? In Christ our trial is done; We live, for he has died, Our condemnation gone. In Christ are we both dead and raised, Alive and free -- his name be praised! Topics: Lent; Lent Used With Tune: MARLEE

The Promises I Sing

Author: Philip Doddridge, 1702-1751 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 106 hymnals Lyrics: 1 The promises I sing, Which sovereign Love hath spoke; Nor will th’eternal King His words of grace revoke; They stand secure, and steadfast still; Not Zion’s hill abides so sure. 2 The mountains melt away When once the Judge appears, And sun and moon decay, That measure mortals’ years; But still the same, in radiant lines, The promise shines thro’ all the flame. 3 Their harmony shall sound Thro’ mine attentive ears, When thunders cleave the ground, And dissipate the spheres; ’Midst all the shock of that dread scene I stand serene, Thy Word my rock. Used With Tune: ARTHUR'S SEAT Text Sources: Published posthumously in Hymns Founded on Various Texts in the Holy Scriptures, by Job Orton (J. Eddowes and J. Cotton, 1755)

Before Elisha's Gate

Author: John Newton Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 16 hymnals First Line: Before Elisha’s gate Lyrics: 1 Before Elisha’s gate The Syrian leper stood; But could not brook to wait, He deemed himself too good: He thought the prophet would attend, And not to him a message send. 2 Have I this journey come, And will he not be seen? I were as well at home, Would washing make me clean: Why must I wash in Jordan’s flood? Damascus’ rivers are as good. 3 Thus by his foolish pride He almost missed a cure; Howe’er at length he tried, And found the method sure: Soon as his pride was brought to yield, The leprosy was quickly healed. 4 Leprous and proud as he, To Jesus thus I came, From sin to set me free, When first I heard His fame: Surely, thought I, my pompous train Of vows and tears will notice gain. 5 My heart devised the way Which I supposed He’d take; And when I found delay, Was ready to go back: Had he some painful task enjoined, I to performance seemed inclined. 6 When by his word he spake, "That fountain opened see; ’Twas opened for thy sake, Go wash, and thou art free": O! how did my proud heart gainsay, I feared to trust this simple way. 7 At length I trial made, When I had much endured; The message I obeyed, I washed, and I was cured: Sinners, this healing fountain try, Which cleansed a wretch so vile as I. Used With Tune: BELSIZE Text Sources: Olney Hymns (London, W. Oliver, 1779), Book 1
