Whether the Word Be Preached or Read

Author: Charles Wesley Appears in 2 hymnals Topics: The Book of the Church : Holy Scripture Lyrics: Whether the Word be preached or read, no saving benefit I gain from empty sounds or letters dead; unprofitable all and vain, unless by faith thy word I hear and see its heavenly character. Unmixed with faith, the Scripture gives no comfort, life, or light to see, but me in darker darkness leaves, implunged in deeper misery, overwhelmed with nature's sorest ills. The Spirit saves, the letter kills. If God enlighten through his Word, I shall my kind Enlightener bless; but void and naked of my Lord, what are all verbal promises? Nothing to me, till faith divine inspire, inspeak, and make them mine. Jesus, the appropriating grace 'tis thine on sinners to bestow. Open mine eyes to see thy face, open my heart thyself to know. And then I through thy Word obtain sure present, and eternal gain. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:5-6

Thou source of being, from whose heart

Author: Dr. A. D. Watson, 1859- Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: The Godhead Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1 Thou source of being, from whose heart Each mighty star with music rolls, Be sacred truth our only chart, The guiding compass of our souls. Oh, may we love Thy will to do, And learn the truth by being true. 2 We thank Thee for the sacred page By men of faith and wisdom penned; Thou dost not cease in any age To us Thy truth inspired to send. Oh, may we love Thy will to do, And learn the truth by being true. 3 Not only would we in our song, But in our lives Thy name confess, Whose love is infinite and strong, Whose noblest praise is righteousness. Oh, may we love Thy will to do, And learn the truth by being true. 4 Here may our spirits, grown more wise, Be lifted earthly cares above; Here may we in communion rise To visions of celestial love; Oh, may we love Thy will to do, And learn the truth by being true. Used With Tune: EULALIE

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 55 hymnals Topics: Holy Scriptures Lyrics: 1 Christ hath a garden walled around, A Paradise of fruitful ground, Chosen by love and fenced by grace From out the world's wide wilderness. 2 Like trees of spice his servants stand, There planted by his mighty hand; By Eden's gracious streams, that flow To feed their beauty where they grow. 3 Awake, O wind of heav'n and bear Their sweetest perfume through the air: Stir up, O south, the boughs that bloom, Till the beloved Master come: 4 That he may come, and linger yet Among the trees that he hath set; That he may evermore be seen To walk amid the springing green. Amen. Scripture: Song of Solomon 4:16 Used With Tune: LEIGHTON

How Shall They Hear the Word of God

Author: Michael Perry Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.8 Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: The Book of the Church : Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1 How shall they hear the word of God unless the truth is told? How shall the sinful be set free, the sorrowful consoled? To all who speak the truth today, impart your Spirit, Lord, we pray. 2 How shall they call to God for help unless they have believed? How shall the poor be given hope, the prisoner reprieved? To those who help the blind to see, give light and love and clarity. 3 How shall the gospel be proclaimed that sinners may repent? How shall the world find peace at last if heralds are not sent? So send us, Lord, for we rejoice to speak of Christ with life and voice. Scripture: Romans 10:14-15 Used With Tune: AUCH JETZT MACHT GOTT
