Whom should I fear, since GOD to me

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXVII (1767) Tune Key: a minor Lyrics: 1 Whom should I fear, since GOD to me Is saving Health and glorious Light; He is my Strength against my Foes, What Dangers can my Soul affright? 2 With fierce Intent my Flesh to tear, When cruel Foes beset me round, They stumbled, and their haughty Crests With sudden Ruin struck the Ground. 3 My humble Heart on GOD depends, And dares with mighty Hosts to cope; Since he's my Help, in doubtful War, For certain Conquest I will hope. 4 Henceforth to dwell within his House My Heart's Desire shall ever be; To know his Will I'll there resort, The Beauty of the LORD to see. 5 For there alone my Soul shall find Sweet Rest, in Times of deep Distress, And safe as on a Rock, with Joy, Abide in that secure Recess. 6 Whilst God by his Almighty Pow'r, My Head o'er all my Foes shall raise; My Soul Thank-Offerings shall make, And sing before him Songs of Praise. Part II 7 Continue, LORD, to hear my Voice, Whene'er to thee I humbly cry; In Mercy all my Pray'rs receive, Nor my sincere Request deny. 8 When thou, O LORD, to seek thy Face, Dost us most graciously advise, "Thy glorious Face I'll always seek," My grateful Heart with Joy replies. 9 Then hide not thou thy Face from me, Nor my requests in Wrath reject; Forsake me not, but Aid afford to him thou didst so oft protect. 10 Though Friends, and nearest Relatives, In Troubles, helpless me forsake; Yet thou, whose Love excels them all, In Mercy, Care of me will take. 11 Instruct me in thy Ways, O LORD, In a plain Path do thou me guide; Lest wicked Men, who watch my Steps, Rejoice to see me tread aside. 12 LORD, disappoint my cruel Foes, Lest they obtain their base Desire, Whose lying Lips and bloody Hands, Against me unprovok'd conspire. 13 I did believe my future Life, Should with thy tender Love be crown'd, Or else my fainting Soul had sunk, With Sorrows deep encompass'd round. 14 Wait on the LORD, with Patience hope, And he will timely Aid afford; Still trust in him, yield not to Fear, Wait thou, I say, upon the LORD. Brother, dear brother

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #X (1767) Tune Key: g minor First Line: Why dost thou now withdraw thy Presence, LORD! Lyrics: 1 Why dost thou now withdraw thy Presence, LORD! Why hidest thou thy Face in my Distress? Why wilt thou not thy wonted Aid afford, When Sorrows deep my trouble Soul oppress? Behold the Heathen, swell'd with Haughtiness, Have with deceitful Wiles the Poor annoyed; But in their Treach'ry let them be destroyed. 2 Triumphant they rejoice, with Pride elate, To see Success their ill Designs attend: And still the sordid Wretch, whom thou dost hate, With Insolence perversly they commend, And for supreme Authority contend: Their stubborn Minds all higher Pow'r disdaining, And in their Hearts no Thoughts of GOD retaining. 3 Oppressive Ways they eagerly pursue, And with contemptuous Scorn their Foes they slight; Because thy Judgments, tho' for ever true Are unobserv'd, and far above their Sight: Deluded, still they think their Actions right; And as thy Vengeance hath not yet distress'd them, They think no Troubles ever shall molest them. 4 Their Words are nought but Treach'ry and Deceit; Their Mouths with Curses fill'd and sland'rous Lies; The wicked Purposes they would compleat, Are always cover'd with a fair Disguise; Near publick Roads they lurk, that by Surprize The Poor and Innocent may be destroyed; Thus is their Art and Malice still employed. 5 Not watchful Lions, lurking in their Den, With greater Fierceness catch their heedless Prey Than these Deceivers take unwary Men; Or threat them, taken, with more Rage than they: Sometimes a deeming Homage they will pay, A humble Look and harmless Aspect wearing; Thus are the Poor deceiv'd, no Danger fearing. 6 They in their Hearts have said, "God hath forgot; "The LORD will not our wicked Actions see: "He doth not heed our deep designed Plot; "So shall the Innocent ensnared be." Arise, O LORD, the Poor from Danger free! Thy mighty Arm against thy Foes extending, Thy humble People from all Harm defending. 7 But why is GOD contemn'd by wicked Men? Because in Pride presumtuously they say, "The LORD regards us no; he never can "Call to account, and our Misdeeds repay:" But thou wilt try all those who go astray: And when the Poor and Orphans are distressed, They look to thee alone to be redressed. 8 Defenceless let the Evil-minded fall, While all their boasted Strength proves but in vain; Ev'n in their dark Designs destroy them all, Till none of all their num'rous Race remain: Thy just Dominion, LORD, assert again; That from thy chosen Land may be expelled, All those who have against thy Pow'r rebelled. 9 Thou always dost thos humble Suppliants hear, That prostrate fall before thy sacred Throne: Thou dost at first incline their Hearts to Pray'r, Then grantest what thy ask; for thou alone Canst help the Fatherless and Poor undone: So shall the earthly Tyrants be destroyed. Who have their Craft against thy Saints employed. With my whole Heart, my GOD and King

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXXXVIII (1767) Tune Key: a minor Lyrics: 1 With my whole Heart, my GOD and King, Thy worthy Praise I will proclaim; Before the GODS with Joy I'll sing, And ever bless thy holy Name. 2 I'll worship at thy sacred Seat; And, with thy Love divine inspir'd, The Praises of thy Truth repeat, Thy Truth through all thy Works admir'd. 3 Thou graciously inclin'd thine Ear, When I to thee address'd my cry; And when my Soul was press'd with Fear, Didst inward Strength to me supply. 4 Therefore shall ev'ry earthly Prince Thy Name with Prsise pursue; Whom these admir'd Events convince, That all thy Works are just and true. 5 They all thy wond'rous Ways, O LORD, With chearful Songs of Joy shall bless; And all thy glorious Acts record, And still thy awful Pow'r confess. 6 For GOD, although enthron'd on high, Does thence the Poor respect; The Proud far off, his scornful Eye, Beholds with ever just Neglect. 7 Though I with Trouble am oppress'd, He shall my spiteful Foes disarm; Relieve my Soul, when most distress'd, And keep me safe from ev'ry Harm. 8 The LORD, whose Mercies ever last, Shall fix my happy State; And mindful of his Favours past, Shall his own glorious Work compleat. Ye Princes who in Might excel

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXIX (1767) Tune Key: g minor Lyrics: 1 Ye Princes who in Might excel, Your grateful Sacrifice prepare; God's glorious Actions loudly tell, His wond'rous Pow'r to all declare; To him alone your Homage pay; To him alone devoutly pray. 2 To His great Name fresh Altars raise; And humbly due Respect afford; Him in his sacred Temple praise, Where he's with solemn State ador'd. To him continual Pray'rs address, His Name with constant Praises bless. 3 'Tis He that with amazing Noise The wat'ry Clouds in sunder breaks: The Ocean trembles at his Voice, When he from Heav'n in thunder speaks; His Voice loud echoes through the Hills, And all the Earth with Terror fills. 4 How full of Pow'r His Voice appears! With what majestick Terror crown'd! Which from the Roots tall Cedars tears, And strews their scatter'd Branches round. Whene'er the LORD in Thunder speaks, The Trees of Libanus he breaks. 5 They, and the Hills on which they grow, Are sometimes hurried far away, And leap, like Hinds that bounding go, Or Unicorns in youthful Play: the Cloud-topp'd Hills themselves will quake, And from their firm Foundations shake. 6 When God in Thunder loudly speaks, And scatter'd Flames of Lightning sends, The Forest nods, the Desart quakes, And stubborn Kadesh lowly bends, To see his pointed Lightnings fly, While Thunder rends the vaulted Sky. 7 He makes the Hinds to cast their Young, And lays the Beasts dark coverts bare; While those that to His Courts belong, Securely sing His Praises there: His Saints in Safety there attend, And at his awful Footstool bend. 8 God rules the angry Floods on high, His boundless Sway shall never cease; His People He'll with Strength supply, And bless His own with constant Peace; On them he sends his Blessings down, And will his Saints with Glory crown. Ye realms of Joy, your Maker's Fame

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #CXLVIII (1767) Tune Key: g minor Lyrics: 1 Ye Realms of Joy, your Maker's Fame, Exalt above the starry Frame; Ye Cherubims, your Voices raise, And Seraphims, to sing his Praise. Thou Silver Moon, that rul'st the Night, With all the glitt'ring Stars of Light, Thou glorious Sun that guid'st the Day, To him your grateful Homage pay. 2 Ye Heav'ns above, his Praise declare, And Clouds that move in liquid Air, Let all adore their sov'reign LORD, For all, at his creative Word, At once from silent Nothing came; Oh, let them bless his holy name, Whose firm Decree stands ever fast, And to Eternity shall last. 3 Let Earth her grateful Tribute pay: Praise him, ye Fish that through the Sea Glide swiftly by, with glitt'ring Scales; Oh, praise him all, ye dreadful Whales, Let misty Air, Fire, Hail and Snow, And Winds that, where he bids them, blow, To him their constant Praise address, And his great Name for ever bless. 4 By lofty Hills, in concert join'd, Cedars and Trees, for Fruit design'd, By ev'ry creeping Thing and Beast, And winged Fowl, GOD's Name be bless'd. Let Men of low or royal Birth, Let all the Judges of the Earth, Let Youth and Maids his Praise proclaim, And hoary Heads advance his Fame. 5 United Zeal by us be shown, To raise his endless Fame alone, Whose Pow'r o'er all the Earth extends, Whose glorious Sway the Sky transcends, His Saints he doth with Honour grace, And ever favour Israel's Race; Your grateful Voice, O, therefore raise, Rejoicing still the LORD to praise.
