O'er field and forest stealing

Author: Dr. A. H. Reynar, 1840-; Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676 Hymnal: Methodist Hymn and Tune Book #225b (1917) Lyrics: 1 O'er field and forest stealing, Comes night, all eyelids sealing, And silence holds the air; But wake, my soul, before Him, And gratefully adore Him Who guards thee with a sleepless care. 2 The sun himself hath vanished, By conquering darkness banished, By darkness, foe of day; But Christ my sun ascendeth, New light and joy He lendeth To drive my spirit's gloom away. 3 The day declared His glory, The stars now tell the story, The marvels of His might, So, when this life is ended, I with the saints ascended Shall praise His love in endless light. 4 My body for its resting Of toil-stained garb divesting, In sleep, from care I hide, What dreams and visions cheer me! How Christ, my Lord, comes near me! And sets me by His wounded side. 5 With mind and body jaded, And eyes from watching faded, I long the day to close. Soon comes the time and hour When from all troublous power Kind death shall bring a sweet repose. 6 When eyes shall close for ever, When soul and body sever, What then for me remains? The God of my salvation Will, in His new creation, Give endless bliss for mortal pains. Topics: The Church and the Kingdom of God Evening; Evening Hymns Languages: English Tune Title: INNSBRUCK

The duteous day now closeth

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-76; Robert Bridges, 1844-1930 Hymnal: The New English Hymnal #253 (1986) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 The duteous day now closeth, Each flower and tree reposeth, Shade creeps o’er wild and wood: Let us, as night is falling, On God our Maker calling, Give thanks to him, the Giver good. 2 Now all the heavenly splendour Breaks forth in starlight tender From myriad worlds unknown; And man, the marvel seeing, Forgets his selfish being, For joy of beauty not his own. 3 His care he drowneth yonder, Lost in the abyss of wonder; To heaven his soul doth steal: This life he disesteemeth, The day it is that dreameth, That doth from truth his vision seal. 4 Awhile his mortal blindness May miss God’s loving kindness, And grope in faithless strife: But when life’s day is over Shall death’s fair night discover The fields of everlasting life. O Zion, Rise And Brighten

Author: Martin Opitz Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #373 (1930) Meter: 7.7.6.7.8 Lyrics: 1 O Zion, rise and brighten, The morn begins to lighten: Thy Light draws nigh to thee. The brightness of His rising, With radiance surprising, Thine eyes shall now rejoice to see. 2 While earth is still beclouded And many Gentiles shrouded In dreary darkness lie, The Light of joy and gladness Dispelleth all thy sadness And glory crowns thee from on high. 3 On ev'ry land and nation The God of our salvation Doth make His sun to shine; And all shall learn the story Of Christ, the Sun of glory, That fills thy heart with light divine. 4 Behold the vast commotion, How, crossing sea and ocean, The nations come to thee! Thy fame hath reached their hearing, And they in hosts are nearing To see thy light and bow the knee. 5 Rejoice, and cease thy weeping, Thy heart within thee leaping, Look out upon the sea, Where ships, swift in their courses, Bring myriad Gentile forces, Who seek the Light that shines on thee. 6 What mighty delegations From Ephah and far nations! All Midian draws night! Fair Shebah gold is bringing, And all unite in singing The praises of the Lord on high. Topics: The Church Year Epiphany Languages: English Tune Title: INNSBRUCK
