My Song Is Love Unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman, ca. 1625-1683 Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 129 hymnals Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me, love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? 2 He came from his blest throne, salvation to bestow; but men cared not, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But oh, my Friend, my Friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend! 3 Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing; resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet all his deeds their hatred feeds; they 'gainst him rise. 5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord sent away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet willing he to suff'ring goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6 In life, no house, no home my Lord on earth might have; in death, no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave. What may I say? Heav'n was his home, but mine the tomb wherein he lay. 7 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine. This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Lord of the worlds above

Author: Rev. Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 502 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord of the worlds above, How pleasant and how fair The dwellings of Thy love, Thine earthly temples, are! To Thine abode my heart aspires, With warm desires to see my God. 2 O happy souls that pray Where God appoints to hear! O happy men that pay Their constant service there! They praise Thee still; and happy they That love the way to Zion's hill. 3 They go from strength to strength, Through this dark vale of tears, Till each arrives at length, Till each in heaven appears: O glorious seat, when God, our King, Shall thither bring our willing feet! 4 God is our Sun and Shield, Our Light and our Defense; With gifts His hands are filled: We draw our blessings thence. Thrice happy he, O God of Hosts, Whose spirit trusts alone in Thee! Amen. By Whom Was David Taught?

Author: William Cowper Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 82 hymnals First Line: By whom was David taught Lyrics: 1. By whom was David taught To aim the deadly blow, When he Goliath fought, And laid the Gittite low? Nor sword nor spear the stripling took, But chose a pebble from the brook. 2. ’Twas Israel’s God and King Who sent him to the fight; Who gave him strength to fling, And skill to aim aright. Ye feeble saints, your strength endures, Because young David’s God is yours. 3. Who ordered Gideon forth, To storm th’invaders’ camp With arms of little worth, A pitcher and a lamp? The trumpets made His coming known And all the host was overthrown. 4. Oh! I have seen the day, When with a single word, God helping me to say, My trust is in the Lord, My soul hath quelled a thousand foes Fearless of all that could oppose. 5. But unbelief, self will, Self righteousness, and pride, How often do they steal My weapon from my side! Yet David’s Lord, and Gideon’s Friend, Will help His servant to the end. Ye Tribes Of Adam, Join

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 174 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Ye tribes of Adam, join With Heav’n, and earth, and seas, And offer notes divine To your creator’s praise: Ye holy throng of angels bright, In worlds of light, begin the song. 2 Thou sun with dazzling rays, And moon that rules the night, Shine to your maker’s praise, With stars of twinkling light: His power declare, ye floods on high, And clouds that fly in empty air. 3 The shining worlds above In glorious order stand, Or in swift courses move, By His supreme command: He spake the word, and all their frame From nothing came, to praise the Lord. 4 He moved their mighty wheels In unknown ages past, And each His word fulfills While time and nature last: In different ways His works proclaim His wondrous name, and speak His praise. 5 Let all the earth-born race, And monsters of the deep The fish that cleave the seas, Or in their bosom sleep; From sea and shore their tribute pay, And still display their maker’s power. 6 Ye vapors, hail, and snow, Praise ye th’almighty Lord, And stormy winds that blow, To execute His word: When lightnings shine, or thunders roar, Let earth adore His hand divine. 7 Ye mountains near the skies, With lofty cedars there, And trees of humbler size, That fruit in plenty bear; Beasts wild and tame, birds, flies, and worms, In various forms, exalt His name. 8 Ye kings and judges, fear The Lord, the sovereign King; And while you rule us here, His heav’nly honors sing; Nor let the dream of power and state Make you forget His power supreme. 9 Virgins and youths, engage To sound His praise divine, While infancy and age Their feebler voices join: Wide as He reigns His name be sung By every tongue in endless strains. 10 Let all the nations fear The God that rules above; He brings His people near, And makes them taste His love: While earth and sky attempt His praise, His saints shall raise His honors high. Ye Waiting Souls, Arise

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 115 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Ye waiting souls, arise, With all the dead, awake! Unto salvation wise, Oil in your vessels take; Upstarting at the midnight cry, Behold, the heavenly Bridegroom nigh! 2. He comes, He comes to call The nations to His bar, And take to glory all Who meet for glory are; Made ready for your full reward, Go forth with joy to meet your Lord. 3. Go, meet Him in the sky, Your everlasting friend; Your head to glorify, With all His saints ascend; Ye pure in heart, obtain the grace To see, without a veil, His face. 4. The everlasting doors Shall soon the saints receive, With seraphs, thrones, and powers, In glorious joy to live; Far from a world of grief and sin, With God eternally shut in. 5. Then let us wait to hear The trumpet’s welcome sound; To see our Lord appear, May we be watching found; And when Thou dost the heavens bow, Be found—as, Lord, Thou find’st us now.
