William Henry Gladstone

1840 - 1891 Person Name: William Henry Gladstone, 1840-1891 Composer of "HAMMERSMITH" in The Hymnary of the United Church of Canada Born: June 3, 1840, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales. Died: July 4, 1892, Westminster, London, England. Eldest son of British prime minister William Gladstone, William attended Eton College and read Greek and Latin at Christ Church College, Oxford University. A Member of Parliament for a total of 20 years, representing Chester for 3; Whitby, Yorkshire for 12; and East Worcestershire for 5. A singer and organist, he was well versed in musical history, especially the development of Anglican church music. He wrote on musical topics, and one of the views he expressed was that choral church services were to be deplored because "the choirs often discourage the congregations from singing." He wrote the anthems "Gracious and Righteous" and "Withdraw Not Thou", & chants, anthems, introits & organ voluntaries. Myles Birket Foster

1851 - 1922 Person Name: M. B. Foster (1851- ) Composer of "ETERNAL LIGHT" in Hymns of Worship and Service Born: November 29, 1851, London, England. Died: December 18, 1922, London, England. Son of an artist, Foster attended Brighton and Guildford Grammar School and entered the stock exchange. He subsequently enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music and played the organ at St. James Church, Marylebone, and St. George’s, Campden Hill. From 1880-92 he was organist at the Foundling Hospital and at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and was choirmaster of St. James, Holborn. He composed children’s cantatas and much church music. C. Warwick Jordan

1840 - 1909 Person Name: C. W. Jordan, 1840-1909 Composer of "GEORGIA" in The Methodist Hymn-Book with Tunes Born: January 27, 1841, Bristol, Gloucester, England. Died: August 30, 1909, Hayward’s Heath, Sussex, England. Cremated: Golders Green, London, England. Jordan began his musical career as a chorister, first at Bristol Cathedral and later at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was educated at Oxford (BMus 1869), and received the Lambeth degree of Doctor of Music in 1886. A champion of plainsong, he was an honorary organist of the London Gregorian Association, where he took a prominent part in the annual festivals at St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was a professor of organ and harmony at the Guildhall School of Music, and an honorary fellow, examiner and treasurer of the Royal College of Organists. Jordan held organist positions at St. Paul’s, Bunhill Row (1857); St. Luke’s Holloway (1860); and from 1866 until his death at St. Stephen’s Church, Lewisham (where he was also choir master).
