Charles Edward Pollock

1853 - 1928 Person Name: Chas. Edw. Pollock Composer of "[I think when I read that sweet story of old]" in Waves of Melody Charles Edward Pollock USA 1853-1928. Born at Newcastle, PA, he moved to Jefferson City, MO, when age 17. He was a cane maker for C W Allen. He also worked 20 years for the MO Pacific Railroad, as a depot clerk and later as Assistant Roadmaster. He was a musician and prolific songwriter, composing 5000+ songs, mostly used in Sunday school settings and church settings. He took little remuneration for his compositions, preferring they be freely used. He produced three songbooks: “Praises”, “Beauty of praise”, and “Waves of melody”. In 1886 he married Martha (Mattie) Jane Harris, and they had three children: Robert, Edward, and a daughter. He died in Merriam, KS. John Perry ================= Pollock, Charles Edward. (Jefferson City, Missouri, 1853-1924). Records of Jefferson City indicate the following: 1897 clerk at depot; residence at 106 Broadway (with Mildred Pollock) 1904-1905 cane maker for C. W. 1859 - 1938 Composer of "[I think, when I read that sweet story of old]" in Junior Carols Pseudonyms: E. Rawdon Bailey, A. Bryce, Nora C. E. Byrne, R. Y. Harding, Ernest B. Leslie, Frank Ernest Newton, Edwyn Vincent, Hermann von Müller ============ Bonner, Carey, was born in Southwark, Surrey, May 1, 1859. He entered the Baptist ministry after studying at Rawdon College, and held pastorates at Sale, Manchester (1884-95) and Portland, Southampton (1895-1900). Since Sept. 1900 he has been Secretary of the Sunday School Union. He edited words and music of the Garland of New Sunday School Music (issued in parts, 1881 and 1882; complete edition 1886), and the S. S. Hymnary, 1905; and the music of the Christian Endeavour Hymnal, 1896, and the Junior Hymnal, 1906. The longer hymns contributed by him to these works include:— 1. Father, hear Thy children's voices. [S. S. Anniversary.] Written 1905 for a Sunday School Festival at Toledo, Ohio, 1905, as above, No. 362. 2. Gently a voice is pleading. [Come to Jesus.] Written 1902, first published in his Hymns for the Mission, 1902, No. 41; 1905, No. 225. 3. God of little children. [Reverence.] 1882, as above; edition 1886, No. 39. Also in School Hymns, 1891, and Junior Hymnal, 1906. 4. In hope, and love, and steadfast faith. [For Conventions.] Written 1896; first published 1896, as above, No. 369. 5. W. B. Judefind

1862 - 1941 Person Name: W. B. J. Arranger of "[I think when I read the sweet story of old]" in Exultant Praises William Burchinell Judefind Born: Circa 1862, Maryland. Around 1888, Judefind taught vocal music at the Westminster Theological Seminary, Maryland. In 1907, he was pastor at the Violetville Methodist Protestant Church, Baltimore, Maryland. Later, he and his brother ran a publishing company in Baltimore. He was living in Baltimore as of 1920. R. G. Staples

b. 1833 Arranger of "[I think when I read that sweet story of old]" in Windows of Heaven Robert Griffin Staples. He was born Robert Griffin on January 24, 1833 in Washington DC. Both of his parents died in a carriage accident when he was an infant; he was then adopted by his mother's sister, Mary Ann King, and her husband, Samuel Johnson Staples and he was given the name Robert Griffin Staples. He was a captain in the Union Army during the Civil War and after the war was promoted to Major. He then worked as chief clerk in the Portsmouth United States Navy Yard. Religion was an important part of his life, as well as music. He died June 20, 1891 in Portsmouth, VA. Dianne Shapiro, from Jean Brickey (great-granddaughter)

Sebastián Cruellas

1789 - 1889 Translator of "Cuando leo en la Biblia" in Praise y Adoración One of the promoters of Spanish hymnody was Spaniard Pedro Castro y Sebastián Cruellas. Henry Barraclough

1891 - 1983 Composer of "[I think, when I read that sweet story of old]" in Alexander's Hymns No. 3 Barraclough was educated in England, and studied organ and piano from the age of five. He worked for a while as a claims adjuster for the Car and General Insurance Company. From 1911-13, he was secretary to Member of Parliament George Scott Robertson. He then joined the Chapman-Alexander evangelistic team as a pianist, and traveled with them to America and remained there. He fought in World War I, rising to the rank of sergeant major, then became secretary, and later an administrator, of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (1919-61). Henry Leslie

1822 - 1896 Person Name: H. Leslie Composer of "[I think, when I read that sweet story of old]" in Church Hymnal Henry David Leslie, English composer and conductor, born in London; studied music in London; In 1855 formed the celebrated Henry Leslie's choir, which he conducted until 1880, and again, 1885-87. He conducted the Herefordshire Philharmonic Society, 1863, and, 1874, was director and conductor of the Guild of Amateur Musicians. His compositions are numerous, including a Te Deum and Jubilate in B; "Immanuel," oratorio; "Bold Dick Turpin,: operetta; "Judith," oratorio; "Ida," opera; much instrumental music, many songs, part songs, anthems, and other church music.
