Jesus, Greatest at the Table

Author: Stephen P. Starke Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Family of God Lyrics: 1 Jesus, greatest at the table, the almighty Son of Man, laid aside his outer clothing, poured some water in a pan; as the twelve lay hushed in silence, he the servant's task began. 2 Marvel how their Lord and Teacher gently taught them not to vie, as he humbly knelt before them, dusty feet to wash and dry; by his tender touch expressing true compassion from on high. 3 Jesus took the role of servant when upon that gruesome span, for all human sin he suffered as a vile and loathsome man; on the cross poured out like water to fulfill the Father's plan. 4 Can we fathom such deep mercy? Do we see what God has done? Who can grasp this great reversal: love that gives his only Son? Christ, the sinless for the sinners, for the many dies the One. 5 Jesus gave to his disciples a commandment that was new: "Show my love to one another, do as I have done for you; all the world will know you love me as you love each other too." Scripture: John 3:34-35 Used With Tune: JULION

Unless the Lord Constructs the House

Author: Mollie Knight Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: People of God / Church Family of God Lyrics: 1 Unless the Lord constructs the house, the builders work in vain; the Lord alone designs and builds foundations that remain. 2 Unless the Lord is keeping watch, the city cannot stand; the sentry guards the gates in vain without God's mighty hand. 3 In vain you labor night and day, by constant care oppressed; the Lord supplies your loved ones' needs and grants them sleep and rest. 4 The Lord designed the family, providing earthly love; our children are God's heritage - a gift from heaven above. 5 Like weapons in a warrior's hand are those who bear our name; with them we face a hostile world assured and free from shame. Scripture: Psalm 127 Used With Tune: ST. ANNE

O Praise the LORD, for It Is Good

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: People of God / Church Family of God Lyrics: 1 O praise the LORD, for it is good to sing unto our God; 'tis right and pleasant for God's saints to tell his praise abroad. The LORD our God builds up the church, finds those who draw apart; God binds their wounds and gently leads; he heals the broken heart. 2 Our Lord is great: he calls by name and counts the stars of night; God's wisdom is unsearchable, and wondrous is his might. The LORD upholds the poor and meek but brings the wicked low; sing praise to God who sends the rain, whose care the cattle know. 3 No human might, no earthly pride delights the LORD above; in those who fear him God delights, in those who trust his love. O Zion, praise the LORD your God, his wondrous love confess; God is your glory and your strength, he will your children bless. Scripture: Psalm 147 Used With Tune: MINERVA Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.
