1820 - 1885 Person Name: James R. Woodford Translator of "Christ, Above All Glory Seated" in Trinity Psalter Hymnal Woodford, James Russell, D.D., was born April 30, 1820, and educated at Merchant Taylors School, and Pembroke College, Cambridge, of which he was a scholar; B.A. Senior Optime, and 2nd class in the Classical Tripos. He was ordained in 1843, and became second Master in Bishop's College, Bristol; and Curate of St. John the Baptist, Broad Street, in that city. He became Incumbent of St. Saviour's, Coalpit Heath, 1845; of St. Mark's, Easton, Bristol, 1848; and Vicar of Kempsford, Gloucestershire, 1855. In 1868 he was preferred by the Crown to the important vicarage of Leeds on Dr. Atlay's appointment as Bishop of Hereford. He was several times Select Preacher at Cambridge. He was also Hon. Chaplain to the Queen (1867). In 1873 he was consecrated, in Westminster Abbey, Bishop of Ely. He died at Ely on Oct. 24, 1885. Bishop Woodford published Sermons, 1853; Lectures for Holy Week, 1853; Lectures on the Creed, 1853; Sermons, 1864; and Sermons, Charges, &c, at later dates. His Hymns arranged for the Sundays and Holy Days of the Church of England appeared in 1852 and 1855. He also joined H. W. Beadon, and Greville Phillimore in editing The Parish Hymn Book, 1863, and (enlarged) 1875. To these collections his original hymns, and his translations from the Latin, were contributed. The originals include:— 1. Lamb of God, for sinners slain. Passiontide. 1852. 2. Not by Thy mighty hand. Epiphany. 1863. 3. O come, and with the early morn. Easter. 1852. 4. Within the Father's house. Epiphany. 1863. Bishop Woodford's translations are annotated under their respective Latin first lines. Bertus Frederick Polman

1945 - 2013 Person Name: Bert Polman, 1945-2013 Author of "God, We Sing Your Glorious Praises" in Christian Worship Bert Frederick Polman (b. Rozenburg, Zuid Holland, the Netherlands, 1945; d. Grand Rapids, Michigan, July 1, 2013) was chair of the Music Department at Calvin College and senior research fellow for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. Dr. Polman studied at Dordt College (BA 1968), the University of Minnesota (MA 1969, PhD in musicology 1981), and the Institute for Christian Studies. Dr. Polman was a longtime is professor of music at Redeemer College in Ancaster, Ontario, and organist at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Waterdown, Ontario. His teaching covered a wide range of courses in music theory, music history, music literature, and worship, and Canadian Native studies. His research specialty was Christian hymnody. He was also an organist, a frequent workshop leader at music and worship conferences, and contributor to journals such as The Hymn and Reformed Worship. Dr. Polman was co-editor of the Psalter Hymnal Handbook (1989), and served on the committees that prepared Songs for Life (1994) and Sing! A New Creation (2001), both published by CRC Publications. Walter Farquharson

b. 1936 Person Name: Walter Henry Farquharson, 1936- Author of "God Who Gives To Life Its Goodness" in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada Farquharson, Walter Henry. (Rosetown, Saskatchewan, May 30, 1936- ). United Church. University of Saskatchewan, B.A., 1957; B.D., 1961 (St. Andrew's College). His single pastorate (1961- ) has been a "tentmaker" ministry" at Saltcoats, Sask., which he combined with teaching English in the town's high school, and which he has from time to time shared with other clergy, notably Margaret Joyce Dickin. Thomas W. Jex-Blake

1832 - 1915 Author of "Lord, We Thank Thee for the Pleasure" in The Cyber Hymnal Jex-Blake, Thomas William, son of Thomas Jex-Blake of Burnwell, was born in 1832, and educated at Rugby, and University College, Oxford (B.A. in 1st class 1855; D.D. 1873). He was some time Fellow of Queen's College, Oxford; from 1858 to 1868 Assistant Master at Rugby; Principal of Cheltenham College, 1868 to 1874; Head Master of Rugby, 1874 to 1887; and Rector of Alvechurch, Redditch, 1887. Dr. Jex-Blake's well-known hymn, "Lord, we thank Thee for the pleasure" (Thanksgiving) was written at the request of Dr. Cotton (then Head Master of Marlborough), in September, 1855. It is in the Rugby and other Public Schools hymn-books, and several general collections. Dr. Jex-Blake's published works do not contain any original poetical compositions. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

William John Downes

1892 - 1987 Translator of "Amo Dia, tutsupera" in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta An English Congregationalist minister, Downes was a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Western College in the University of Bristol (UK), a member of the board of KELI, and a member of the Esperanto Academy, as well as a member of the editorial committee that produced Adoru Kantante. 44 of his works appeared in AK, and 36 in Adoru. Particularly noteworthy for the quantity and quality of his original hymn texts in Esperanto.
