He lives in us, the Christ of God

Author: Michael Perry (born 1942) Appears in 4 hymnals Topics: Easter 5 Going to the Father; God's Church Hope and Confidence; Lent 1, The King and the Kingdom Temptation; Pentecost The Holy Spirit; Pentecost 10 The Mind of Christ; Pentecost 17 The Proof of Faith; Pentecost 20 Endurance; Pentecost 21 The Christian Hope; Pentecost 3 The Life of the Baptized; Pentecost 4 The Freedom God Gives; Pentecost 6 Made New in Christ; Pentecost 8 The Fruit of the Spirit; Trinity Sunday The Trinity Lyrics: 1 He lives in us, the Christ of God, his Spirit joins with ours; he brings to us the Father's grace with powers beyond our powers. And if enticing sin grows strong, when human nature fails, God's Spirit in our inner self fights with us, and prevails. 3 Our pangs of guilt and fears of death are Satan's stratagems — by Jesus Christ who died for us God pardons; who condemns? And when we cannot feel our faith, nor bring ourselves to pray, the Spirit pleas with God for us in words we could not say. 3 God gave his Son to save us all — no other love like this! then shall he ever turn away from those he marks as his? And God has raised him from the grave, in this we stand assured; son none can tear us from his love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Scripture: Romans 8 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

Jerusalem! my happy home!

Author: F. B. P., 16th Century; David Dickson Appears in 857 hymnals Topics: Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Eternity; Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Eternity Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem! my happy home! Name ever dear to me! When shall my labors have an end, In joy and peace and thee? 2 When shall these eyes thy heav'n-built walls And pearly gates behold? Thy bulwarks with salvation strong, And streets of shining gold? 3 There happier bow'rs than Eden’s bloom, Nor sin nor sorrow know: Blest seats! through rude and stormy scenes, I onward press to you. 4 Why should I shrink at pain and woe, Or feel at death dismay? I’ve Canaan’s goodly land in view, And realms of endless day. 5 Apostles, martyrs, prophets, there Around my Savior stand; And soon my friends in Christ below, Will join the glorious band. 6 Jerusalem! my happy home! My soul still pants for Thee; Then shall my labors have an end, When I thy joys shall see. Used With Tune: AVON (Martyrdom) Text Sources: Alt. by Williams and Boden, 1801

If thou but suffer God to guide thee

Appears in 190 hymnals Topics: Christian Life and Hope Lyrics: 1 If thou but suffer God to guide thee, And hope in Him through all thy ways, He'll give thee strength, whate'er betide thee, And bear thee through the evil days; Who trusts in God's unchanging love, Builds on the rock that none can move. 2 What can these anxious cares avail thee, These never-ceasing moans and sighs? What can it help, if thou bewail thee O'er each dark moment as it flies? Our cross and trials do but press The heavier for our bitterness. 3 Only be still and wait His leisure In cheerful hope, with heart content To take whate'er Thy Father's pleasure And all-deserving love hath sent; Nor doubt our inmost wants are known To Him who chose us for His own. 4 He knows the time for joy, and truly Will send it when He sees it meet, When He has tried and purged thee duly, And finds thee free from all deceit, He comes to thee all unaware, And makes thee own His loving care. 5 Nor think, amid the heat of trial, That God hath cast thee off unheard; That he whose hopes meet no denial Must surely be of God preferred; Time passes and much change doth bring And sets a bound to everything. 6 All are alike before the Highest; 'Tis easy to our God, we know, To raise thee up, though low thou liest, To make the rich man poor and low: True wonders still by Him are wrought Who setteth up and brings to nought. 7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving, So do thine own part faithfully, And trust His Word, though undeserving, Thou yet shalt find it true for thee; God never yet forsook at need The soul that trusted Him indeed.
