Bright the cloud and bright the glory

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise #353 (2008) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 with refrain Topics: Christian Year Season of Epiphany Lyrics: 1 Bright the cloud and bright the glory, brighter far than mere sun's rays, opening up a glimpse of heaven to disciples' awestruck gaze: power past their comprehension, splendour too profound for praise. All was changed, all was changed; and they would never be the same. 2 Bright the cloud but dark the glory wrought by human enterprise, opening wide with awful terror stark new worlds before our eyes: power grasped but far from mastered, knowledge keen but not yet wise. All has changed, all has changed, and we shall never be the same. 3 From the cloud and from the glory human need brought Jesus down: down to death, then from death rising to receive a victor's crown. Lead us, Christ, to prize compassion more than might, wealth, or renown. Help us change, help us change, that we may never be the same. Scripture: Luke 23:49 Languages: English Tune Title: LUX TREMENDA

'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime

Author: Jean de Brebeuf, 1563-1649; Jesse E. Middleton, 1872-1960 Hymnal: Gather Comprehensive #361 (1994) Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.8 with refrain Topics: Seasons and Feasts Epiphany Refrain First Line: Jesus your king is born Lyrics: 1 ’Twas in the moon of wintertime, When all the birds had fled, That God the Lord of all the earth Sent angel choirs instead; Before their light the stars grew dim, And wand'ring hunters heard the hymn: Jesus your king is born; Jesus is born, In excelsis gloria. 2 The earliest moon of wintertime Is not so round and fair As was the ring of glory 'round The helpless infant there. The chiefs from far before him knelt With gifts of fox and beaver pelt. Jesus your king is born; Jesus is born, In excelsis gloria. 3 O children of the forest free, The angel song is true; The holy child of earth and sky Is born this day for you; Come kneel before the radiant boy, Who brings you beauty, peace, and joy. Jesus your king is born; Jesus is born, In excelsis gloria. Scripture: Matthew 2:9-11 Languages: English Tune Title: UNE JEUNE PUCELLE

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Author: Philips Brooks, 1835-1893 Hymnal: Gather Comprehensive #363 (1994) Meter: 8.6.8.6.7.6.8.6 Topics: Seasons and Feasts Epiphany Lyrics: 1 O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. 2 For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to all on earth! 3 How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav'n. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel! (Refrain) 3 Frankincense to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh, Prayer and praising, Gladly raising, Worshiping God on high. (Refrain) 4 Myrrh is mine: its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gath'ring gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone cold tomb. (Refrain) 5 Glorious now behold him rise, King and God and sacrifice: Heav'n sings, "Hallelujah!" "Hallelujah!" earth replies. As with Gladness Men of Old

Author: William C. Dix, 1837-1898 Hymnal: Gather Comprehensive #374 (1994) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Topics: Seasons and Feasts Epiphany Lyrics: 1 As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright; So, most glorious Lord, may we Evermore your splendor see. 2 As with joyful steps they sped To that lowly manger bed, There to bend the knee before Christ whom heav'n and earth adore; So may we with hurried pace Run to seek your throne of grace. 3 As they offered gifts most rare At that manger crude and bare; So may we this holy day, Drawn to you without delay, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to you, our heav'nly King. 4 Christ Redeemer, with us stay, Help us live your holy way; And when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide, Where no clouds your glory hide. 5 In the heav'nly city bright None shall need created light; You, its light, its joy, its crown, You, its sun which goes not down; There for ever may we sing Alleluias to our King. The First Nowell

Hymnal: Gather Comprehensive #377 (1994) Meter: Irregular Topics: Seasons and Feasts Epiphany First Line: The first Nowell, the angel did say Refrain First Line: Nowell, Nowell Lyrics: 1 The first Nowell the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay akeeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. 2 They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. (Refrain) 3 And by the light of that same star Three wise came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. (Refrain) 4 This star drew nigh to the northwest, O'er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. (Refrain) 5 Then entered in those wise men three, Full rev'rently upon the knee, And offered there, in his presence, Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. (Refrain) 6 Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav'nly Lord; Who with the Father we adore And Spirit blest for evermore.
