Frank von Christierson

1900 - 1996 Topics: Proper 12 Year A; Proper 12 Year A; Proper 12 Year C Author of "Eternal Spirit of the Living Christ" in Voices United Frank von Christierson (1900-1996) was born near Helsinki, Finland. He attended San Jose (California) High School, Stanford University (BA, Psychology, 1923), and San Francisco Theological Seminary (BD 1929). In 1983 he was awarded the citation of distinguished alumnus, and became a Fellow of The Hymn Society. He has served as youth director at First Presbyterian Church, San Luis Obispo, and pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Citrus Heights, California. He has published a hymnal collection entitled Make a Joyful Noise (1987) and is represented in many hymnals. Born in Finland, he was brought to America as a boy of four. He is a graduate of Stanford University and of San Francisco Theological Seminary. William Henry Harris

1883 - 1973 Person Name: William Henry Harris (1883-1973) Topics: Proper 12 Year B Composer of "NORTH PETHERTON" in Ancient and Modern Sir William Henry Harris KCVO (28 March 1883 - 6 September 1973) was an English organist and composer, affectionately nicknamed 'Doc H' by his choristers. Harris was born in Fulham, London and died in Petersfield. He was a chorister of Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill. At the age of 14, he took up a "flexible" position as Assistant Organist at St David's Cathedral in Wales, followed at 16 by a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he was Professor of Organ and Harmony from 1921 to 1955. He was organist at St Augustine's Church, Edgbaston from 1911 to 1919 and concurrently of Assistant Organist at Lichfield Cathedral followed in 1919 by becoming Organist successively at New College and in 1929 Christ Church, Oxford, moving to St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1933. As Organist at Windsor, Harris was at his most productive. He produced music for the Three Choirs Festival, was a conductor at both the 1937 and 1953 coronations, and had music premiered at the Proms, all of which led to being appointed KCVO in 1954. Harris is best remembered for his Anglican church music, though his main achievements were as a choir-trainer. His most famous works are the anthems "Faire is the heaven" (1925) and to a lesser extent "Bring us, O Lord God" (1959), both for unaccompanied double choir, and "Strengthen ye the weak hands" (1949) for choir and organ. His very accessible Communion Service in F was frequently sung in a great many Anglican parish churches up until the 1970s. The canticles Harris in A and Harris in A minor are still sung at Evensong in a number of Anglican cathedrals. He also composed cantatas and organ pieces, as well as the hymn tune Alberta (often used for the words "Lead, Kindly Light"), and various Anglican psalm chants. --en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

James Stratton Coles, born at Shepton Beauchamp, March 27, 1845, and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating B.A. 1868, and M.A. 1872. On taking Holy Orders in 1869, he became Curato of Wantage. In 1872 he was preferred as Rector of Shepton-Beauchamp, Somerset, and in 1884 Librarian of the Pusey Library, Oxford. Mr. Coles has contributed the following hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern, and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Church Hymns. 1. Lord, in whose eternal counsels. For guidance and growth in holiness. It was first printed as a leaflet, written for E. C. U. Festival, c. 1870; and then included, after revision, in S. P. C. K. Church Hymns, 1871. 2. The Pt. ii. in Hymns Ancient & Modern begins “Christ with the twelve the last Passover keeping." 3. We pray Thee, heavenly Father, p. 242, ii., 5. This hymn, with the exception of stanza i., is entirely rewritten in The English Hymnal, 1906. 4. Ye who own the faith of Jesus. [B. V. b. 1931 Author of "Jesus Heard with Deep Compassion" Joy F. Patterson (b. 1931), of Wassau, Wisconsin, is an elder in the Presbyterian Church who has written many texts and tunes; twenty-nine are collected in Come, You People of the Promise (Hope Publishing, Co., 1994); another collection, Teach Our Eyes New Ways of Seeing, was published in 2005 (Selah). William Watkins Reid

1890 - 1983 Author of "Forgive Us, Lord, for Shallow Thankfulness" Reid, William Watkins, Sr. (Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, October 15, 1890--February 18, 1983, Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania). Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions. Used the title of "My God is There, Controlling," the Society has published 65 of his hymns, and several others were published in the Society's "searches", for new hymns. Willem Barnard

1920 - 2010 Topics: Proper 12 Year B Author (Dutch) of "For The Crowd Of Thousands" in Voices United Willem (Wilhelmus) Barnard was born in Rotterdam on August 15, 1920. Barnard was a Dutch protestant (Netherlands Reformed) theologian, pastor, writer and poet. He published about twenty volumes of poetry under the pseudonym Guillaume van der Graft. After graduating from the Grammar School he studied Dutch Language and Literature at Leiden. Later he studied theology and was a Netherlands Reformed minister in Hardenberg and Nijmegen. In 1954 he became study-secretary of the Prof. Dr. G. van der Leeuw-foundation, which meant a lot for the renewal of liturgy and church-hymns. In the sixties he was minister in Roosendaal, but his unstable health forced him to apply for an early retirement in 1974. He died in Utrecht on November 21, 2010. NN

She received a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines and a Master of Music Education degree from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J. She was the head of the music department at the Philippine Christian College and served on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines. NN
