T. A. Lacey

1853 - 1931 Person Name: T. A. L. Author of "O faith of England, taught of old" in The English Hymnal Lacey, Thomas Alexander, s. of G. F. Lacey, was b. at Nottingham, Dec. 20, 1853. He entered Balliol Coll., Oxford, as an exhibitioner in 1871 (B.A. 1876, M.A. 1885), was ordained D. 1876, P. 1879, was from 1894 to 1903 Vicar of Madingley near Cambridge, and since then has been Chaplain of the London Diocesan Penitentiary. He was one of the Committee who compiled The English Hymnal, 1906, and contributed to it twelve translations (8, 66, 67, 69, 104, 123, 124, 174, 208, 226, 249, 325), also one unpublished and one previously published original, viz., 1. O Faith of England, taught of old. [Church Defence.] 2. The dying robber raised his aching brow. [Good Friday.] First in the Treasury, Sept. 1905, p. 482, headed "Sursum." Author (refrain) of "Lift Up Your Voices (Psalm 68:1-19)" in Lift Up Your Hearts Martin Tel is the C. F. Seabrook Director of Music at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. He conducts the seminary choirs, teaches courses in church music, and administers the music for the daily seminary worship services. He served as senior editor of Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship (2012). His love for music began in a dairy barn in rural Washington State, where he heard his father belt out psalms and hymns while milking the cows. Martin earned degrees in church music and theology from Dordt College, the University of Notre Dame, Calvin Theological Seminary, and the University of Kansas. Howard Slenk

b. 1931 Harmonizer of "GENEVAN 68 (OLD 113TH)" in Lift Up Your Hearts Howard J. Slenk (b. Holland, MI, 1931) received his undergraduate education from Calvin College and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in Columbus; his dissertation was entitled The Huguenot Psalter in the Low Countries. He taught at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois, and at Calvin College from 1967 until retiring in 1995. From 1970 to 1993 Slenk served as organist and director of music at Woodlawn Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. William B. Forbush

1868 - 1927 Person Name: William Byron Forbush Author of "God of our youth, to whom we yield" in At Worship Born: February 20, 1868, Springfield, Vermont. Died: October 23, 1927, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Buried: Quaker Burial Grounds, Hartford Road, Baltimore, Maryland. Forbush graduated from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1888, and became a principal in Amherst, New Hampshire, the next year. He served as pastor of the Riverside Congregational Church, Riverside, Rhode Island (1893-94), entered Union Theological Seminary, in 1889, graduating in 1892. He received an AM in 1890 and PhD in 1892 from the University of New York, and was acting pastor at the Rockaway Church in Brooklyn while enrolled in 1890. He served as pastor at Riverside Church in East Providence, Rhode Island (1892); Tabernacle Church, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (1894-96); Warren, Massachusetts (1896-1908); Winthrop Church, Boston, Massachusetts (1905-06); and Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan (to 1913). In 1913, he became President of the American Institute of Child Life in Philadelphia, resigning in 1914 to pursue writing. He established his home in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, where he lived the rest of his life and for a time headed the Woolman House, a school of social and religious education under the Quaker management of Swarthmore. In 1895, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Hanover College, Indiana. He founded the Knights of King Arthur in 1893, which attracted thousands of young boys. In 1918, he became General Editor of the publications of the University Society of New York, serving until 1924, when he became consulting editor of the John C.
