As Surely as I Live, God Said

Author: Nikolaus Herman, c. 1480-1561; Matthias Loy, 1828-1915 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #235 (1982) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 As surely as I live, God said, I would not see the sinner dead. I want him turned from error’s ways, Repentant, living endless days. 2 To us therefore Christ gave command: "Go forth and preach in ev'ry land; Bestow on all my pard'ning grace Who will repent and mend their ways. 3 "All those whose sins you thus remit I truly pardon and acquit, And those whose sins you will retain Condemned and guilty shall remain. 4 "What you will bind, that bound shall be; What you will loose, that shall be free; To my dear Church the keys are giv'n To open, close the gates of heav'n." 5 The words which absolution give Are his who died that we might live; The minister whom Christ has sent Is but his humble instrument. 6 When ministers lay on their hands, Absolved by Christ the sinner stands; He who by grace the Word believes The purchase of his blood receives. 7 All praise to you, O Christ, shall be For absolution full and free, In which you show your richest grace; From false indulgence guard our race. 8 Praise God the Father and the Son And Holy Spirit, Three in One, As was, is now, and so shall be World without end, eternally! With Broken Heart and Contrite Sigh

Author: Cornelius Elven, 1791-1873 Hymnal: Christian Worship (1993) #303 (1993) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 With broken heart and contrite sigh, A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry. Your pard'ning grace is rich and free-- O God, be merciful to me! 2 I smite upon my troubled breast, With deep and conscious guilt oppressed, Christ and his cross my only plea-- O God, be merciful to me! 3 Far off I stand with tearful eyes Nor dare uplift them to the skies, But you can all my anguish see-- O God, be merciful to me! 4 No gifts, no deeds that I have done Can for a single sin atone. To Calvary alone I flee-- O God, be merciful to me! 5 And when, redeemed from sin and hell, With all the ransomed souls I dwell, My joyous song shall ever be: God has been merciful to me! Thy Ways, O Lord, with Wise Design

Author: Ambrose Searle Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #530 (1941) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Thy ways, O Lord, with wise design, Are framed upon Thy throne above, And ev'ry dark and bending line, Meets in the center of Thy love. 2 With feeble light, and half obscure Poor mortals Thine arrangements view, Not knowing that the least are sure, And, the mysterious just and true. 3 Thy flock, Thine own peculiar care, Tho' now they seem to roam uneyed, Are led or driven only where They best and safest may abide. 4 They neither know nor trace the way: But whilst they trust Thy guardian eye, Their feet shall ne'er to ruin stray, Nor shall the weakest fail or die. 5 My favored soul shall meekly learn To lay her reason at Thy throne; Too weak Thy secrets to discern, I'll trust Thee for my Guide alone. Amen. Topics: Cross and Comfort Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:12 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. LUKE
