I saw, beyond the tomb

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #237 (1828) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Holy Spirit The certaintiy of death and Judgment Lyrics: 1 I saw, beyond the tomb, The awful Judge appear, Prepar'd to scan with strict account, My blessings wasted here. 2 His wrath like flaming fire, Burn'd to the lowest hell-- And in that hopeless world of wo, He bade my spirit dwell. 3 Ye sinners, fear the Lord, While yet 'tis call'd today; Soon will the awful voice of death Command your souls away. 4 Soon will the harvest close-- The summer soon be o'er-- And soon, your injur'd, angry God Will hear your prayers no more. Scripture: Jeremiah 8:20

Stop, poor sinners, stop and think

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #240 (1828) Meter: Irregular Topics: Holy Spirit The certaintiy of death and Judgment Lyrics: 1 Stop, poor sinners, stop and think, Before you farther go; Will you sport upon the brink Of everlasting wo! On the verge of ruin stop-- Now the friendly warning take-- Stay your footsteps--ere ye drop Into the burning lake. 2 Say, have you an arm like God, That you his will oppose? Fear ye not that iron rod With which he breaks his foes? Can you stand in that dread day, Which his justice shall proclaim, And the earth shall melt away Like wax before the flame? 3 Ghastly death will quickly come. And drag you to his bar; Then to hear your awful doom, Will fill you with despair! All your sins will round you crowd; You shall mark their crimson dye; Each for vengeance crying loud, And what can you reply? 4 Tho' your heart were made of steel, Your forehead lin'd with brass; God at length will make you feel, He will not let you pass; Sinners, then in vain will call, Those who now despise his grace, "Rocks and mountains on us fall, And hide us from his face."
