At age of 11 he went to work in a Pro­test­ant print shop in Mex­i­co Ci­ty and helped pro­duce El Evan­gel­is­ta Mex­i­ca­no (The Mex­i­can Evan­gel­ist) for the Meth­od­ist Church of the South; he rose to be­come its di­rect­or for 17 years. Look­ing to im­prove him­self, Men­do­za en­tered a night school for work­ers, but lat­er feel­ing the call to preach the Gos­pel, he en­tered the Pres­by­ter­i­an Sem­in­a­ry in Mex­i­co Ci­ty. When the sem­in­a­ry closed temp­o­rar­i­ly, Men­do­za en­tered the Meth­od­ist In­sti­tute of Pueb­la, where he fin­ished the course in the­ol­o­gy. In 1898 he be­came a mem­ber of the An­nu­al Con­fer­ence of the Mex­i­can Meth­od­ist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he be­longed to the South­ern Meth­od­ist Con­fer­ence of Cal­i­for­nia. Elizabeth Rundle Charles

1828 - 1896 Person Name: Elizabeth R. Charles Author of "Never Further Than Thy Cross" in The Cyber Hymnal Charles, Elizabeth, née Rundle, is the author of numerous and very popular works intended to popularize the history of early Christian life in Great Britain; of Luther and his times; of Wesley and his work; the struggles of English civil wars; and kindred subjects as embodied in the Chronicles of the Schönherg-Cotta Family, the Diary of Kitty Trevelyan, &c, was born at Tavistock, Devonshire, Her father was John Rundle, M.P., and her husband, Andrew Paton Charles, Barrister-at-Law. Mrs. Charles has made some valuable contributions to hymnology, including original hymns and translations from the Latin and German. These were given in her:— (1) The Voice of Christian Life in Song; or, Hymns and Hymn-writers of Many Lands and Ages, 1858; (2) The Three Wakings, and other Poems, 1859; and (3) The Chronicles of the Schönberg-Cotta Family; (4) Poems, New York, 1867. This has some additional pieces. Her hymn on the Annunciation, "Age after age shall call thee [her] blessed," appeared in her Three Wakings, &c., 1859. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ========================= Charles, Elizabeth, née Rundle. William Dodd

1729 - 1777 Person Name: William Dodd, 1729-1777 Author of "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord " in The Cyber Hymnal William Dodd (29 May 1729 – 27 June 1777) was an English Anglican clergyman and a man of letters. He lived extravagantly, and was nicknamed the "Macaroni Parson". He dabbled in forgery in an effort to clear his debts, was caught, convicted, and, despite a public campaign for a Royal pardon, became the last person to be hanged at Tyburn for forgery. Dodd was born in Bourne in Lincolnshire, the son of the local vicar. He attended Clare Hall in the University of Cambridge from 1745 to 1750, where he achieved academic success and graduated as a wrangler.[1] He then moved to London, where his spendthrift habits soon left him in debt. He married impulsively on 15 April 1751, to Mary Perkins, daughter of a domestic servant, leaving his finances in an even more precarious position. At the urging of his concerned father, he decided to take holy orders, and was ordained a deacon in 1751 and a priest in 1753, serving as a curate in a church in West Ham, then as a preacher at St James Garlickhythe, and then at St Olave Hart Street. He became a popular and fashionable preacher, and was appointed as a chaplain in ordinary to the King in 1763. He became a prebend in Brecon, and was a tutor to Philip Stanhope, later 5th Earl of Chesterfield. He became chaplain to the King, and became a Doctor of Laws at Cambridge University in 1766. After he won £1,000 in a lottery, he became involved in schemes to build the Charlotte Chapel in Pimlico, and bought a share of the Charlotte Chapel in Bloomsbury. Despite his profession, he continued his extravagant lifestyle, and became known as the "maccaroni parson". In 1772, he became rector of Hockliffe, in Bedfordshire, and vicar of Chalgrove In 1774, in an attempt to rectify his depleted finances, he attempted to obtain the lucrative position of rector of St George's, Hanover Square. He wrote a letter to Lady Apsley, wife of the Lord Chancellor, offering her £3,000 to secure the position. The letter was traced back to Dodd, and he was dismissed from his existing posts. He became an object of public ridicule, and was taunted as Dr Simony in a play by Samuel Foote in the Haymarket Theatre. He spent two years abroad, in Geneva and France, while the scandal subsided. He returned to England in 1776. In The Luck of Barry Lyndon Thackeray has his protagonist refer to meeting 'Dr Simony' in Soho and to a friendship with Foote. In February 1777, he forged a bond for £4,200 in the name of his former pupil, the Earl of Chesterfield, to clear his debts. A banker accepted the bond in good faith, and lent him money on the strength of it. Later the banker noticed a small blot in the text and had the document re-written. When the clean copy was presented to the Earl to sign, in order to replace the old one, the forgery was discovered. Dodd immediately confessed, and begged time to make amends. He was, however, imprisoned in the Wood Street Compter pending trial. He was convicted, and sentenced to death (see the full record of the trial under External References below.) Samuel Johnson wrote several papers in his defence, and some 23,000 people signed a 37-page petition seeking a pardon. Nevertheless, Dodd was publicly hanged at Tyburn on 27 June 1777. He wrote several published works, including poems, a novel, and theological tracts. His most successful work was The Beauties of Shakespeare (1752). He also wrote a Commentary on the Bible (1765–1770), and composed the blank verse Thoughts in Prison while in Newgate Prison between his conviction and execution. --en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Anna S. Dober

1713 - 1739 Author of "Holy Lamb, who thee receive" in Hymn and Tune Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (Round Note Ed.) Dober, Anna, née Schindler, was born April 9, 1713, at Kunewald, near Fulnek, Moravia. She went to Herrnhut in 1725, and in 1730 joined her friend and townswoman, Anna Nitschmann (q.v.), in forming the "Jungfrauenbund" (i. Cor, vii. 32-34, Rev. xiv. 4) of the unmarried sisters at Herrnhut. On July 13, 1737, she became the wife of L. J. Dober (consecrated Bishop, 1742, died at Herrnhut, 1766), then General Elder of the Moravian Church. After assisting him in his labours for the conversion of the Jews at Amsterdam, she died at Marienborn, near Budingen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Dec. 12, 1739 (Koch, vi. 324). A faithful and gifted servant of Christ, she was the author of numerous hymns, full of personal devotion to her Lord, and of deep trust in Him; which passed into the Moravian collections, that of 1778 containing 18 by her. Of one written May 26, 1735, beginning "Süsser Heiland deiner Gnade" [No. 1023 in Appendix ii. to the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch, 1735, in 13 stanzas of 4 lines, and translated as "Far greater than one thought or could suppose," as No. 64 in pt. ii. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754; stanzas iv.-xiii. already as No. 25 in 1742], Koch says stanzas iv., v. have become almost a Confession of Faith among the Moravians. The only one of her hymns which has passed into use outside the Moravian hymn-books is:— Du heiliges Kind. [The Lamb of God.] 1st published in Appendix iii. to the Herrnhut Gesang-Buch 1735, No. 1046, in 10 stanzas of 5 1. In the Brüder Gesang-Buch, 1778, No. 368, stanzas viii. was omitted. The only translation in common use is:— Holy Lamb, who Thee receive, a free translation in 8 stanzas of 4 lines, by J. Wesley, in Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1740 (Poetical Works, 1868-72, vol. i. p. 280). Thence in full as No. 39 in the Moravian Hymn Book 1742, but abridged and altered in later editions. In 1801, No. 274, is stanzas i.-iv. from the 1789, which begins, "Lamb of God, who Thee receive,” and stanzas vi.-vii. rewritten from Wesley's stanzas v.-viii. (1886, No. 308). Stanzas i.-iv. of this 1801 arrangement are in Montgomery's Christian Psalmist, 1825, and Elliott's Psalms & Hymns, 1835. The original form was given in full as No. 28 in Hymns and Spiritual Songs, 1753, and repeated as No. 340 in the Wesleyan Hymn Book 1780 (ed. 1875, No. 350). Stanzas i., iii.-v., viii., slightly altered, were adopted as No. 78 in Mercer's Church Psalm and Hymn Book, 1855 (Ox. ed., 1864, No. 373). Other centos are found in the New Congregational Hymn Book, 1859; Psalmist, 1878, and in America in the Meth. Episcopal Hymns, 1849; the Baptist Service of Song, 1871; Hatfield's Church Hymn Book, 1872, &c. Other forms in common use are: — 1. Blessed Lord, who Thee receive, stanzas 1, 3, 4, 8, altered as in the Rugby School Hymn Book 1850-1876; Kennedy, 1863, and others. 2. Father, they who Thee receive, stanzas 1, 3, 4, 8, in Hedge and Huntington's Collection, Boston, U. S., 1853; and the Plymouth Collection, 1855. 3. Holy Lord, who Thee receive , stanzas 1, 3, 4, 8, in the Irish Church Hymnal, 1869-73. 4. Lamb of God, who Thee receive, stanzas 1, 3, 4, of Wesley altered, and two stanzas based on Wesley's 5, 8, in Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833. William Cullen Bryant

1794 - 1878 Person Name: William C. Bryant Author of "When This Song of Praise Shall Cease" in The Cyber Hymnal Bryant, William Cullen. First in order of time of the great American poets, Bryant was born at Cummington, Mass., Nov. 3, 1794, and was educated at Williams College. In 1815 he'was called to the Bar, and practised for a time at Great Barrington. In 1825 he retired from the Bar, settled at New York, and devoted himself to literary pursuits, founding the New York Review, and editing for a short time the New York Evening Post. He died June 12, 1878. His poetical and other works are well known. His hymns were written at intervals during his long life. They were collected and privately printed in 1869, and number over 20. Those in common use are:— 1. Almighty, listen while we raise. Praise. This is given as "Almighty hear us,” &c, in the Unitarian Hymn and Tune Book, Boston, 1868. It was introduced into Great Britain through Beard's Collection, 1857. 2. Deem not that they are blest alone. Mourning. In this form it is in Beard's Collection, 1837. It is best known as "0 deem not they are," &c, and in this form it is No. 964 in Songs for the Sanctuary, N. Y., 1865-72, No. 452, in Dr. Martineau's Hymns of Prayer and Praise, Lond., 1873, &c. 3. Father, to Thy kind love we owe. God's Lovingkindness. This is given in several modern collections, including the Unitarian Hymn and Tune Book, Boston, 1868, Martineau, 1873, &c. 4. 0 God, whose dread and dazzling brow. Compassion desired. Is No. 57 in the Boston Hymn and Tune Book, 1868, as above. 5. When he who from the scourge of wrong. Hope of the Resurrection. This is seldom found in modern hymnals. Text in Lyra Sacra Americana, 1868. The above hymns (1-5) appeared in Dr. H. D. Sewall's (Unitarian) Psalms & Hymns for Social and Private Worship, 1820, and were written at the instance of a Miss Sedgwick. Following as near as possible the chronological order of the hymns we have next:— 6. O Thou Whose own vast temple stands. Opening of a Place of Worship. Written in 1835 for the Dedication of a Chapel in Prince Street, N. Y. This is the most widely known of this author's hymns. It was introduced into Great Britain as early as 1837, when it was included in Beard's Collection, No. 405. It is in 4 stanzas of 4 lines. Orig. text in Songs for the Sanctuary, N. Y., 1865, No. 1017, and Martineau, 1873, No. 727. Another form of the hymn is "Thou, Whose unmeasured temple stands," This is No. 569 in the American Presb. Psalms and Hymns, Richmond, 1867, Horder's Congregational Hymns, Lond. 1884, No. 747, and others. 7. All that in this wide world we see. Omnipresence. This is dated 1836. In his Collection in 1837, No. 17, Beard gives it as an original contributed thereto, thus fixing its first publication. 8. Thou unrelenting past. The Past. Dates from 1836. Also in Martineau, 1873, No. 508. 9. Not in the solitude. God in the City. Dates from 1836, and is No. 26 in Martineau, 1873. 10. Whither, midst falling dew. Divine Guidance. This, in common with Nos. 8 and 9, is more a poem than hymn. It is addressed "To a Waterfowl," and dates from 1836. In Martineau, 1873. 11. Dear ties of mutual succour bind. Charity Sermons. No. 905 in the Amer. Methodist Episcopal Hymnal, 1878. It dates from about 1836. 12. 0 Thou whose love can ne'er forget. Ordination. Given (but not as an original contributed thereto) in Beard's Collection (Eng.), 1837. 13. Mighty One, before Whose face. Ordination. This is dated 1840 (but is probably earlier), and is given in several collections, including Mr. Beecher's Plymouth Collection, 1855, and others. 14. Look from Thy sphere of endless day. Home Missions. This hymn has also attained to considerable use both in Great Britain and America. It dates from 1840. It is in the Song. for the Sanctuary, N. Y., 1865, Horder's Congregational Hymns, 1884, &c. 15. Lord, who ordainest for mankind. Thanks for a Mother's love. Written at Dr. Osgood's suggestion, and printed in his Christian Worship, 1862. It is repeated in Martineau, 1873. 16. All praise to Him of Nazareth. Holy Communion. Dr. Hatfield in his Church Hymn Bk., 1872, No. 736, gives this in 3 stanzas of 4 lines. In the Songs for the Sanctuary it is in its full form of 5 stanzas. It dates from 1864. 17. As shadows cast by cloud and sun. Epiphany. In the Methodist Episcopal Hymnal, N. Y., 1878. It was contributed to that Hymnal, 1877, but was composed for the Semi-Centennial Celebration of the Church of the Messiah, Boston, March 19, 1875. 18. When doomed to death the Apostle lay. On behalf of Drunkards. Also in the Methodist Episcopal Hymnal, 1878. In addition to the above the following hymns by Bryant are in limited use:— 19. All things that are on earth. Love of God. In Beard's Collection, 1837. 20. Close softly, fondly, while ye weep. Death. In Mr. Beecher's Plymouth Coll., 1855. 21. How shall I know thee in the sphere which keeps? The Future Life. Wild was the day, the wintry sea. The Pilgrim Fathers. In Hymns of the Spirit, by Longfellow and Johnson. Boston, 1864. In 1869, Hymns by W. C. Bryant, 12mo, were privately printed. In this work the texts of many of the older hymns are altered. The dates of his hymns are difficult to determine, and many of those given above are approximate only. Bryant's genius was cool, meditative, and not distinguished by lyric fire. His hymns are correct and solid, but none reach the highest rank. [Rev. F. M.
