When Descending from the Sky

Author: John Newton Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 19 hymnals Lyrics: 1. When descending from the sky The Bridegroom shall appear; And the solemn midnight cry, Shall call professors near: How the sound our hearts will damp! How will shame o’erspread each face! If we only have a lamp, Without the oil of grace. 2. Foolish virgins then will wake And seek for a supply; But in vain the pains they take To borrow or to buy: Then with those they now despise, Earnestly they’ll wish to share; But the best, among the wise, Will have no oil to spare. 3. Wise are they, and truly blest, Who then shall ready be But despair will seize the rest, And dreadful misery: Once, they’ll cry, we scorned to doubt, Though in lies our trust we put; Now our lamp of hope is out, The door of mercy shut. 4. If they then presume to plead, Lord open to us now; We on earth have heard and prayed, And with thy saints did bow: He will answer from his throne, Though you with My people mixed, Yet to Me you ne’er were known, Depart, your doom is fixed. 5. O that none who worship here May hear that word, Depart! Lord impress a godly fear On each professor’s heart: Help us, Lord, to search the camp, Let us not ourselves beguile; Trusting to a dying lamp Without a stock of oil. Jesus, let Thy pitying eye

Author: C. Wesley, 1707-1788 Appears in 302 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Jesus, let Thy pitying eye Call back a wandering sheep; False to Thee, like Peter, I Would fain, like Peter, weep; Let me be by grace restored, On me be all long-suffering shown; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 2 Saviour, Prince, enthrone above, Repentance to impart, Give me, through Thy dying love, The humble, contrite heart; Speak the reconciling word, And let Thy mercy melt me down; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 3 For Thine own compassion's sake The gracious wonder show; Cast my sins behind Thy back, And wash me white as snow, Speak my paradise restored Redeem me by Thy grace alone; Turn, and look upon me, Lord, And break my heart of stone. 4 Look, as when Thy languid eye Was closed, that we might live; "Father," at the point to die My Saviour gasped "forgive!" Surely, with that dying word, He turns, and looks, and cries, "'Tis done!" O my bleeding, loving Lord, Thou break'st my heart of stone! O the Depth of Love Divine

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O the depth of love divine, the unfathomable grace! Who shall say how bread and wine God into us conveys! How the bread his flesh imparts, how the wine transmits his blood, fills his faithful people’s hearts with all the life of God! 2 Let the wisest mortals show how we the grace receive; feeble elements bestow a power not theirs to give. Who explains the wondrous way, how through these the virtue came? These the virtue did convey, yet still remain the same. 3 How can spirits heavenward rise, by earthly matter fed, drink herewith divine supplies and eat immortal bread? Ask the Father’s wisdom how: Christ who did the means ordain; angels round our altars bow to search it out, in vain. 4 Sure and real is the grace, the manner be unknown; only meet us in thy ways and perfect us in one. Let us taste the heavenly powers, Lord, we ask for nothing more. Thine to bless, ’tis only ours to wonder and adore. Scripture: John 6:35-58 Used With Tune: AMSTERDAM

Jesus Leaves His Throne On High

Author: Benjamin Beddome, 1717-1795 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Jesus leaves His throne on high, To save a ruined race; Lo, He condescends to die, And take the sinner’s place: In deep slumbers see Him borne To the tomb, but soon He wakes; On the third, the glorious morn, Death’s iron bands He breaks. 2 Soldiers at the entry stand, The sacred place to guard; But behold, the time’s at hand, The tomb must be unbarred: Angels roll the stone away, While the watchers’ eyes are sealed, Death reluctant yields his prey, And Jesus stands revealed. 3 Raise, ye saints, your joyful eyes, The victory is yours; Jesus now above the skies, Your endless bliss secures: He the first-fruits from the grave, Gives a pledge of all to come: Trust in Him, whose power to save Shall bring you safely home. Teaching in the Synagogue

Author: Chris Fenner; Charles Wesley Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.8.7.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1. Teaching in the synagogue, With sacred scroll unfurled, See this Son of Nazareth Now preaching to the world. News had spread of his renown, And thus he spoke on Sabbath day, Reading from Isaiah's script, Fulfilled in what he'd say: 2. "Take forgiveness to the poor, And sin shall thence depart; By my balm, the sickness cure, Bind up the broken hearts; By my salve of gospel grace, The eyes anoint, the sight restore; In my mercy's arms embrace, Then go and sin no more." 3. Speak, divine Interpreter, Your own prophetic word; All my list'ning soul shall hear And hang upon its Lord. Fix my eye of faith on you, From whom it never shall remove, Till your glorious face I see And hear your voice above. 4. Be it, Lord, in me fulfilled On this momentous day; By your blood-bought pardon sealed, Pray, take my sins away. In paths of righteousness Teach by th'anointing from above; Save me, Jesus, through your grace And rule me by your love. Topics: Epiphany Scripture: Luke 4:16-21 Used With Tune: AMSTERDAM
