Daniel C. Eddy

Eddy Author of "Maker of land and rolling sea" in The Seventh-Day Adventist Hymn and Tune Book Eddy, Daniel C., D.D., born in Salem, Massachusetts, May 21, 1823, and entered the Baptist ministry in 1846. He is the author of several hymns, one of which for the Opening of a Place of Worship, "Maker of land and rolling sea," is in the Baptist Praise Book, 1871. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) ========================= Eddy, Daniel Clarke. (Salem, Massachusetts, May 21, 1823--July 26, 1896, Brooklyn, New York). Baptist. Harvard College, M.A. 1855; Madison University, D.D. 1859. Pastorates at Lowell, Massachusetts, 1846-1856; Boston, 1856-1862, 1864-1871, 1873-1877; Philadelphia, 1862-1864; Fall River, Mass., 1871-1873; Hyde Park, Mass., 1877-1881; Brooklyn, 1811-after 1888. Author of several books for the young, and also books on travel. Wrote several hymns, including "God of the nations! from thy throne." Another hymn contains four stanzas, each starting with a line from the doxology, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow." Included in Baptist Praise Book (1874) is this dedication hymn: "Maker of land and rolling sea, We dedicate this house to thee." Henry S. Burrage, in Baptist Hymn Writers and Their Hymns (1888), noted that Dr. Eddy had compiled a hymnal, which was nearly ready for publication, entitled The Memorial Hymnal, a Collection of Hymns and Tunes for the Use of Baptist Families and Churches. --Deborah Carlton Loftis, DNAH Archives

Anton Wilhelm Böhm

1673 - 1722 Person Name: A. W. Boehm Translator of "Of him who did salvation bring" in The Primitive Methodist Church Hymnal Anton Wilhelm Böhm Germany 1673-1722 He was a German Lutheran royal chaplain at St. James Palace in London, having been educated at Lemgo and Hameln and at the University of Halle. He was known as an author and translator. In 1698 he was called to Arolsen to educate the t two daughters of the Count of Woldeck, but his religious opinions were not acceptable to some of the clergy there, and the count let him go. He took an offer to teach for German families in London.At this time he was frail and on a small income. After studying English, he opened a school in 1702. When Prince George of Denmark, at the request of Queen Anne, introduced the “Book of Common Prayer” into his Lutheran Chapel, Boehm was recommendedby his friend Heinrich Ludolf, Secretary to Prince George, to be assistant chaplain. He was to read the prayers, as the chaplain found them too hard to read. In 1705 he became chaplain to the prince. In 1712 he translated and published “Arndt's True Christianity”. He died at 48 in 1722 and ws buried in the Greenwich churchyard, where a monument was erected to his memory. Boehm was a prolific author. Besides works in German, he published translations and editions of other authors, including six treatises on Christianity and other manuscripts, published in 1731 by Professor Johann Jakob Rambach of Halle University. Alfred A. Woodhull

1810 - 1836 Author of "Great God of nations now to thee" in The Evangelical Hymnal Woodhull, Alfred Alexander, M.D., grandson of John Woodhull, D.D., of Freehold, New Jersey; was born March 25, 1810, educated for the medical profession, and practiced at Princeton, where he died Oct. 5, 1836. His hymn, “God of the passing year to Thee," appeared as No. 406 in the official edition of Presbyterian Psalms & Hymns, Princeton, in 1829. It has attained to extensive use in the altered form as "Great God of nations, now to Thee." Its authorship was determined by Dr. Hatfield, in his Church Hymn Book, 1872, No. 1295.
