Psalm 107 Part 4

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 64 hymnals Topics: Nation's blest and punished First Line: Would you behold the works of God Lyrics: Would you behold the works of God, His wonders in the world abroad, Go with the mariners, and trace The unknown regions of the seas. They leave their native shores behind, And seize the favor of the wind; Till God command, and tempests rise That heave the ocean to the skies. Now to the heav'ns they mount amain, Now sink to dreadful deeps again; What strange affrights young sailors feel, And like a stagg'ring drunkard reel! When land is far, and death is nigh, Lost to all hope, to God they cry; His mercy hears the loud address, And sends salvation in distress. He bids the winds their wrath assuage, The furious waves forget their rage; 'Tis calm, and sailors smile to see The haven where they wished to be. O may the sons of men record The wondrous goodness of the Lord! Let them their private off'rings bring, And in the church his glory sing. Scripture: Psalm 107

Praise for national peace

Author: Steele Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 93 hymnals Topics: National prayer and praise; Praise for peace of the nation First Line: Great ruler of the earth and skies Lyrics: 1 Great ruler of the earth and skies, A word of thine almighty breath Can sink the world, or bid it rise: Thy smile is life, thy frown is death. 2 When angry nations rush to arms, And rage, and noise, and tumult reign, And war resounds its dire alarms, And slaughter dyes the hostile plains; 3 Thy sovereign eye looks calmly down, And marks their course, and bounds their pow'r; Thy word the angry nations own, And noise and war are heard no more. 4 Then peace returns with balmy wing, (Sweet peace! with her what blessings fled!) Glad plenty laughs, the vallies sing, Reviving commerce lifts her head. 5 Thou good, and wise, and righteous Lord, All move subservent to thy will; And peace and war await thy word, And thy sublime decrees fulfil. 6 To thee we pay our grateful songs, Thy kind protection still implore? O may our hearts, and lives, and tongues, Confess thy goodness and adore. Scripture: Psalm 46:9

Not Alone for Mighty Empire

Author: William P. Merrill, 1867-1954 Appears in 88 hymnals Topics: National Righteousness Lyrics: 1 Not alone for mighty empire, Stretching far o'er land and sea; Not alone for bounteous harvests, Lift we up our hearts to Thee. Standing in the living present, Memory and hope between, Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving Praise Thee most for things unseen. 2 Not for battleship and fortress, Not for conquests of the sword; But for conquests of the spirit Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord; For the heritage of freedom, For the home, the church, the school; For the open door to manhood In a land the people rule. 3 For the armies of the faithful, Souls that passed and left no name; For the glory that illumines Patriot lives of deathless fame; For our prophets and apostles, Loyal to the living Word; For all heroes of the Spirit, Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord. 4 God of justice, save the people From the clash of race and creed, From the strife of class and faction: Make our nation free indeed. Keep her faith in simple manhoood Strong as when her life began, Till it find its full fruition In the brotherhood of man. Amen. Used With Tune: HYFRYDOL
