Johan Olof Wallin

1779 - 1839 Topics: Christ Second Advent of Author of "To Realms of Glory I Behold" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Johan Olaf Wallin was born at Stora Tuna, in 1779, and early displayed his poetical powers. In 1805, and again in 1809, he gained the chief prize for poetry at Upsala. In the latter year he became pastor at Solna; here his ability as a preacher was so striking that he was transferred to Stockholm, in 1815, as "pastor primarius," a title for which we have no exact equivalent. In 1818 he was made Dean of Westeras, and set about the task of editing a revised hymn-book for the whole of Sweden. This task he completed in 1819, and published it as, Den Swenska Psalmboken, af Konungen gillad och stadfästad (The Swedish hymn-book, approved and confirmed by the King). To it he contributed some 150 hymns of his own, besides translations and recastings; and the book remains now in the form in which he brought it out. Died: January 6, 1800, Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Pseudonym: Jones of Nayland. Jones was educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford. He became Vicar of Bethersden, Kent (1764); Pluckley, Kent; and Paston, Northamptonshire; perpetual Curate of Nayland, Suffolk (1777); and Rector of Hollingbourne, Kent (1798). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1775. His works include: The Catholic Doctrine of the Trinity, 1756 Fairchild Discourses, 1775 Physiological Disquisitions, 1781 A Treatise on the Art of Music, 1784 Church Pieces for the Organ with Four Anthems in Score, 1789 Jones was a descendant of the Col. J. Jones, who was one of the signatories to the death warrant of King Charles I of England. He used to regularly observe January 30 as a day of fasting and humiliation for his ancestor’s sin. Robert Archibald Smith

Smith (b. Reading, Berkshire, England, 1780; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, 1829) was an excellent musician. By the age of ten he played the violin, cello, and flute, and was a church chorister. From 1802 to 1817 he taught music in Paisley and was precentor at the Abbey; from 1823 until his death he was precentor and choirmaster in St. George's Church, Edinburgh. He enlarged the repertoire of tunes for psalm singing in Scotland, raised the precentor skills to a fine art, and greatly improved the singing of the church choirs he directed. He was the Assistant Director of Music at the King's School, Parramatta, a tutor in church music at Ridley College in Melbourne and in 1965 he was acting cathedral organist and master of the choristers at St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. Bartlett was an Anglican clergyman and wrote many compositions suitable for church performance. Bartlett was also a member of the Australian Hymn Book committee, and has been involved in the initiation of schemes for promoting the composition and performance of new liturgical music.
