Michael Saward

Michael John Saward (b. Blackheath, Kent, England, 1932) was residentiary Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and a church commissioner and member of the general synod of the Church of England. Educated at Eltham College, Bristol University, and Tyndale Hall, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1956. Saward served in several congregations and was radio and television officer for the Church Information Office (1967-1972). His publications include Leisure (1963), Couldn’t Care Less (1966), Don't Miss the Party (1974), and All Change (1983). Associated with the Jubilate Group for a number of years, he has written some sixty hymns and served as text editor for Hymns for Today's Church (1982). Bert Polman

Will S. Hays

1837 - 1907 Person Name: William S. Hays Topics: Christ Character; Christ Friend; Praise of Christ; Christ Character; Christ Friend; Praise of Christ Arranger of "[I have found a friend in Jesus]" in Hymns of Faith William Shakespeare Hays USA 1837-1907. Born in Louisville, KY, he attended colleges in IN, TN, and KY, after which he became a reporter for the “Louisville Democrat” newspaper. He later became a columnist for the “Louisville Courier-Journal” after a stint as a steamboat captain on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. During the Civil War Hays was jailed in New Orleans, LA, for writing songs that supported the Confederate cause. Musically inclined, he wrote about 350 songs. The song “Mollie Darling” (1872) sold a million copies. As with some other hymns, the tune of his popular vaudeville song, “Little old log cabin” was adapted to the new hymn by the lyricist, C W Fry, who wrote “Lily of the valley”. George Nelson Allen

1812 - 1877 Topics: Christ, the Son of God Titles, Life and Character Composer of "MAITLAND" in The Evangelical Hymnal George Nelson Allen (1812-1871), studied at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Oh OH and with Lowell Mason in Boston. Allen gave a strong musical foundation to Oberlin College in its earliest years; in addition to being Professor of Music he also served as Professor of Geology and Natural History, Secretary and Treasurer. In 1835 he compiled The Oberlin Social and Sabbath Hymn Book, in which appeared his most well known tune MAITLAND (also known as CROSS AND CROWN or WESTERN MELODY) with the text "Must Jesus bear the cross alone?". This was adapted by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1938 for his hymn "Precious Lord, take my hand". hand." He composed anthems and wrote some additional music for Isaac Woodbury's Oratorio "Absalom." Born in Waterford, Ireland, he attended the National Model School, Waterford, and Islington Theological College. His desire to be a missionary was thwarted by his poor health. He returned to Cork and became a schoolmaster and evangelist in ireland. In 1888 he moved to London as an independent itinerant preacher. He was arrested in 1912 for selling scripture cards door to door without a license. The judge dismissed the case upon learning he was composer of the hymn tune” Pax Tecum.”. John Cawood

1775 - 1852 Person Name: Cawood Topics: Angels song of; Christ His Character and Offices; Song of the Angels of Bethlehem Author of "Hark, what mean those holy voices" in Hymns for Christian Devotion John Cawood was born in 1775, at Matlock, Derbyshire, where his father carried on a small farm. He enjoyed very limited educational advantages. At the age of eighteen he occupied a menial position. But seeking every opportunity of self improvement, and aided by those who interested themselves in his behalf, he was enabled in 1797 to enter S. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and obtained his B.A. in 1801, and his M.A. in 1807. He was ordained in 1801, and most of his life in the ministry was spent as perpetual Curate of S. Ann's Chapel of Ease, Bewdley, Worcestershire. He died in 1852. He published several prose works, but no volume of hymns or poems. His son says, "My father composed about thirteen hymns, which have one by one got into print, though never published by himself, or any one representing him." --Annotations of the Hymnal, Charles Hutchins, M.A., 1872 ======================= Cawood, John, M. A., born at Matlock, Derbyshire, March 18, 1775. His parents being in humble circumstances, he received in childhood but a limited education, and at 18 was engaged in the service of the Rev. Mr. Cursham, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts. Three years' study, however, under careful direction, enabled him to enter St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1797. Obtaining his degree in 1801, he took Holy Orders, and became successively Curate of Ribsford and Dowles, and Incumbent of St. Ann's Chapel of Ease, Bewdley, Worcestershire. He died Nov. 7, 1852. His hymns, 17 in all, were never published by himself. Of these 9 were included in Cotterill's Selection, 8th ed., 1819, Nos. 268-276. Most of these have passed into other collections. These are :— 1. Almighty God, Thy word is cast. After a Sermon. 2. Hark! what mean those holy voices? (1819.) Christmas. 3. Begin a joyful song. (1819.) Christmas. 4. Behold yon wondrous star. Edwin H. Nevin

1814 - 1889 Topics: Christ Character of; Christ Character of Author of ""With you always"" in Laudes Domini Nevin, Edwin Henry, D.D., son of Major David Nevin, was born at Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, May 9, 1814. He graduated in Arts at Jefferson College, 1833; and in Theology at Princeton Seminary, in 1836. He held several pastorates as a Presbyterian Minister from 1836 to 1857; then as a Congregational Minister from 1857 to 1868; and then, after a rest of six years through ill health, as a Minister of the Reformed Church, first at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then in Philadelphia. Dr. Nevin is the author of several hymns, the more important of which are:— 1. Always with me [us], always with [us] me. Jesus always present. 2. Come up hither, come away. Invitation Heavenward. 3. Happy, Saviour, would I be. Trust. This is given in the Lyra Sacra Americana as "Saviour! happy should I be." This change was made by the editor "with the consent and approbation of the author." 4. 0 heaven, sweet heaven. Heaven. Written and published in 1862 after the death of a beloved son, which made heaven nearer and dearer from the conviction that now a member of his family was one of its inhabitants" (Schaff’s Christ in Song, 1870, p. 539). 5. Live on the field of battle. Duty. Appeared in the Baptist Devotional Hymn Book, 1864. 6. I have read of a world of beauty. Heaven. 7. Mount up on high! as if on eagle's wings. Divine Aspirations.
