Behold us, Lord, and let our cry

Appears in 19 hymnals Topics: Support and comfort in God; Support and comfort in God Lyrics: 1 Behold us, Lord, and let our cry Before thy throne ascend, Cast thou on us a pitying eye, And still our lives defend. 2 For slaughtering foes insult us round, Oppressive, proud and vain, They cast thy temples to the ground, And all our rites profane. 3 Yet thy forgiving grace we trust, And in thy power rejoice; Thine arm shall crush our foes to dust, Thy praise inspire our voice. 4 Be thou with those whose friendly hand Upheld us in distress, Extend thy truth through every land, And still thy people bless. Scripture: Psalm 54

Self-Examination; or, Evidences of Grace

Appears in 54 hymnals Topics: Support and Counsel form God; Support and Counsel form God First Line: Judge me, O Lord, and prove my ways Lyrics: 1 Judge me, O Lord, and prove my ways, And try my reins, and try my heart; My faith upon thy promise stays, Nor from thy law my feet depart. 2 I hate to walk, I hate to sit With men of vanity and lies; The scoffer and the hypocrite Are the abhorrence of mine eyes. 3 Amongst thy saints will I appear Array'd in robes of innocence; But when I stand before thy bar, The blood of Christ is my defence. 4 I love thy habitation, Lord, The temple where thine honours dwell; There shall I hear thy holy word, And there thy works of wonder tell. 5 Let not my soul be join'd at last With men of treachery and blood, Since I my days on earth have past Among the saints, and near my God. Scripture: Psalm 26

Benefit of Afflictions, and Support under them

Appears in 91 hymnals Topics: Counsel and Support form God; Support and comfort in God; Afflictions support and profit; Counsel and Support form God; Support and comfort in God; Afflictions support and profit First Line: Consider all my sorrows, Lord Lyrics: 1 Consider all my sorrows, Lord, And thy deliverance send; My soul for thy salvation faints, When will my troubles end! 2 Yet I have found 'tis good for me To bear my Father's rod; Afflictions make me learn thy law, And live upon my God. 3 This is the comfort I enjoy When new distress begins: I read thy word, I run thy way, And hate my former sins. 4 Had not thy word been my delight When earthly joys were fled, My soul, opprest with sorrow's weight, Had sunk amongst the dead. 5 I know thy judgments, Lord, are right, Though they may seem severe; The sharpest sufferings I endure, Flow from thy faithful care. 6 Before I knew thy chastening rod, My feet were apt to stray; But now I learn to keep thy word, Nor wander from thy way. Scripture: Psalm 119:67

A Morning Psalm

Appears in 51 hymnals Topics: Temptations support under them First Line: O Lord, how many are my Foes Lyrics: 1 O Lord, how many are my Foes, In this weak State of Flesh and Blood! My Peace they daily discompose, But my Defence and Hope is GOD. 2 Tir'd with the Burdens of the Day, To thee I rais'd an Evening Cry: Thou heard'st when I began to pray, And thine Almighty Help was nigh. 3 Supported by thine heav'nly Aid, I laid me down, and slept secure: Not Death should make my Heart afraid, Though I should wake and rise no more. 4 But God sustain'd me all the Night; Salvation doth to GOD belong: He rais'd my Head to see the Light, And make his Praise my Morning Song. Scripture: Psalm 3:1-5

Psalm 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 47 hymnals Topics: Temptations support under them First Line: My God, how many are my fears! Lyrics: My God, how many are my fears! How fast my foes increase! Conspiring my eternal death, They break my present peace. The lying tempter would persuade There's no relief in heav'n; And all my swelling sins appear Too big to be forgiv'n. But thou, my glory and my strength, Shalt on the tempter tread, Shalt silence all my threatening guilt, And raise my drooping head. [I cried, and from his holy hill He bowed a listening ear; I called my Father, and my God, And he subdued my fear. He shed soft slumbers on mine eyes, In spite of all my foes; I woke, and wondered at the grace That guarded my repose.] What though the hosts of death and hell All armed against me stood, Terrors no more shall shake my soul; My refuge is my God. Arise, O Lord, fulfil thy grace, While I thy glory sing; My God has broke the serpent's teeth, And death has lost his sting. Salvation to the Lord belongs; His arm alone can save: Blessings attend thy people here, And reach beyond the grave. Scripture: Psalm 3

God's Goodness to the Children of Men

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 113 hymnals Topics: God His people's refuge and support First Line: Ye sons of men, with joy record Lyrics: 1 Ye sons of men, with joy record The various wonders of the Lord; And let his pow'r and goodness sound Thro' all your tribes the earth around. 2 Let the high heav'ns your songs invite, Those spacious fields of brilliant light; Where sun, and moon, and planets roll, And stars, that shine from pole to pole. 3 Sing, earth, in verdant robes array'd, Its herbs and flow'rs, its fruits and shade; Peopled with life of various forms, Fishes and fowls, and beasts and worms. 4 View the broad sea's majestic plains, And think how wide its Maker reigns; That band remotest nations joins, And on each wave His goodness shines. 5 But O! that brighter world above, Where lives and reigns incarnate Love! God's only Son in flesh array'd, For man a bleeding victim made. 6 Thither, my soul, with rapture soar; There in the Land of Praise adore; The theme demands an angel's lay, Demands an undeclining day. Scripture: Psalm 107:31

Shall atheists dare insult the cross

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 39 hymnals Topics: Comfort and support in God; Counsel and support from God; Support and counsel from God Lyrics: Shall atheists dare insult the cross Of our Redeemer, God? Shall infidels reproach his laws, Or trample on his blood? What if he choose mysterious ways To cleanse us from our faults? May not the works of sovereign grace Transcend our feeble thoughts? What if his gospel bids us fight With flesh, and self, and sin, The prize is most divinely bright That we are called to win. What if the foolish and the poor His glorious grace partake, This but confirms his truth the more, For so the prophets spake. Do some that own his sacred name Indulge their souls in sin? Jesus should never bear the blame, His laws are pure and clean. Then let our faith grow firm and strong, Our lips profess his word; Nor blush nor fear to walk among The men that love the Lord. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
