Morgan Rhys

1716 - 1776 Person Name: Morgan Rhys, 1716-1779 Author of "O Gariad!" in The Cyber Hymnal Rhys, Morgan, a famous Welsh hymnwriter of the last century. He published several collections of hymns under quaint titles. Golwg o ben Nebo ar wlad yr Addewid (A View of the land of promise from the top of Mr. Nebo). Frwyd Ysbrydal (The Spiritual Warfare). Graddfanan y Credadyn, &c. (The Groanings of the Believer). He died in 1776, and was buried at Llanfynydd Church, in Caermarthenshire. [Rev. W. A short notice of this writer (a schoolmaster in connection with the Calvinistic Methodists), is given in H. William John Downes

1892 - 1987 Author of "Glorkantas anĝeloj en alta ĉiel' (sen refreno)" in TTT-Himnaro Cigneta An English Congregationalist minister, Downes was a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Western College in the University of Bristol (UK), a member of the board of KELI, and a member of the Esperanto Academy, as well as a member of the editorial committee that produced Adoru Kantante. 44 of his works appeared in AK, and 36 in Adoru. Particularly noteworthy for the quantity and quality of his original hymn texts in Esperanto.

James Grant

? - 1785 Author of "O Zion, Afflicted with Wave upon Wave" in The Cyber Hymnal Grant, James, born probably in Edinburgh, but date unknown, and d. there on Jan. 1st, 1785. An ironmonger by trade, he carried on his business in West Bow, Edinburgh. From 1746 to 1752 he held several offices of importance in the Town Council of Edinburgh. Amongst several works of benevolence which received his aid the Orphan Hospital in Edinburgh was specially favoured, and to it the profits of the 1st and 2nd ed. of his Hymns, &c, were given. Those hymns and poems were mainly written to popular Scottish melodies, and were published as:— Original Hymns and Poems, written by a Private Christian for his own use, and Published at the earnest desire of Friends, Edinburgh, 1784. (2nd ed., 1820, 3rd a reprint by D. Sedgwick, Lond., 1862.) Of the hymns the best known is "O Zion, afflicted with wave upon wave." (God’s Unchangeable Love.) It appeared as Hymn xvi. in the Original Hymns, &c, 1784, in 7 stanzas of 4 lines, and is found in several modern collections, including the New Congregational Hymn Book, 1859, No. 610, and others. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology

b. 1931 Versifier of "All Praise to the LORD" in Psalter Hymnal (Gray) Helen Ann (Brink) Otte Walter (b. Grand Rapids, MI, 1931) versified this psalm in 1982 for the Psalter Hymnal. She received her education at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has worked as a teacher, proofreader, and librarian. She was a member of the Poets' Workshop that worked with the revision committee to prepare psalm versifications for the 1987 Psalter Hymnal. After her first husband died and she remarried, she remained active as a freelance writer, especially of children's stories and dramas, some of which have been published in Reformed Worship under the name Helen Walter.
