Why Has My God My Soul Forsook?

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 19 hymnals First Line: Why has my God my soul forsook Lyrics: 1. Why has my God my soul forsook, Nor will a smile afford? Thus David once in anguish spoke, And thus our dying Lord. 2. Though ’tis Thy chief delight to dwell Among Thy praising saints, Yet Thou canst hear a groan as well, And pity our complaints. 3. Our fathers trusted in Thy name, And great deliverance found; But I’m a worm, despised of men, And trodden to the ground. 4. Shaking the head, they pass me by, And laugh my soul to scorn; In vain he trusts in God, they cry, Neglected and forlorn. 5. But Thou art He who formed my flesh By Thine almighty Word; And since I hung upon the breast, My hope is in the Lord. 6. Why will my Father hide His face, When foes stand threatening round, In the dark hour of deep distress, And not a helper found? 7. Behold Thy darling left among The cruel and the proud, As bulls of Bashan, fierce and strong, As lions roaring loud. 8. From earth and hell My sorrows meet To multiply the smart; They nail My hands, they pierce My feet, And try to vex My heart. 9. Yet if Thy sovereign hand let loose The rage of earth and hell, Why will my heav’nly Father bruise The Son He loves so well? 10. My God, if possible it be, Withhold this bitter cup But I resign my will to Thee, And drink the sorrows up. 11. My heart dissolves with pangs unknown, In groans I waste my breath; Thy heavy hand has brought Me down Low as the dust of death. 12. Father, I give My Spirit up, And trust it in Thy hand; My dying flesh shall rest in hope, And rise at Thy command. Used With Tune: WINDSOR Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

Jesu, Our Lenten Fast of Thee

Author: Anonymous; John W. Hewett Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Jesu, our Lenten fast of Thee We duteous learn to keep, A healing time, by Thy decree, For all Thy wounded sheep. 2. A time in which towards paradise, Once lost by carnal sense, The souls redeemed by Thee may rise Through chastening abstinence. 3. Now with Thy Church be present, Lord, In all Thy saving grace, And hear us as with one accord Mourning, we seek Thy face. 4. Most Merciful, forgive the past, The sins which we deplore; Thy sheltering arms around us cast, That we may sin no more. 5. To Thee our sacrifice we bring Of Lenten fast and prayer, Till, cleansed by Thee, our God and King, Thy Paschal joy we share. 6. Grant this, O Father, through Thy Son, And through the Spirit blest, Who art with Them forever One, Eternally confessed. God Bids, And Lo!

Author: James Merrick, 1720-1769 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: God bids, and lo! a burning waste Lyrics: 1 God bids, and lo! a burning waste, Where rolled the floods before, And, touched by the descending blast, The springs are seen no more. 2 Sad witness of some dire offense, Behold the fertile soil No more its wonted gifts dispense, But mock the tiller’s toil. 3 He bids, and o’er the desert wide The liquid lake is spread; New springs the thirsty earth divide, And murmuring lift the head. 4 There myriads, late with hunger wan, By Him assembled, meet; There pleased the future city plan, And fix their sure retreat. 5 And now they sow the foodful grain, The tender vine they rear; Now waves the harvest o’er the plain, And plenty crowns the year. 6 Blest in His care, the sires with joy A numerous race behold; Nor dares disease their herds annoy, Or waste the peopled fold. 7 His works attentive while it sees, The Heav’n-instructed mind Shall own, how equal His decrees, His providence, how kind! I in my strait cried to the Lord

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 I in my strait cried to the Lord, and he gave ear to me. 2 From lying lips, and guileful tongue, O Lord, my soul set free. 3 What shall be given unto thee? What heaped on thee, false tongue? 4 The burning coals of juniper, sharp arrows of the strong. 5 Woe's me that I in Mesech am a sojourner so long: that I beside the tents do dwell to Kedar that belong. 6 My soul with him that hateth peace hath long a dweller been. 7 I am for peace, but when I speak, for battle they are keen. Preston Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 In anguish to the LORD I cry, my desp'rate prayer is heard: "Save me, O LORD, from lips that lie and ev'ry untrue word!" 2 What just reward will God command for such deceitful souls? He'll Come, The Judge will Surely Come

Author: John Needham Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: He’ll come, the Judge will surely come Lyrics: 1 He’ll come, the Judge will surely come, Ye atheists mock no more; His chariot wheels are hastening on, The Judge is at the door. 2 Swift glide the streams of time along To bring the awful day; Each flying hour withdrawing says The Judge will not delay. 3 See where the mighty angel stands, Embracing sea and shore; To Heaven he lifts his hand, and swears That time shall be no more. 4 He swears—behold, the Judge descends His office to complete; The tribes of Adam trembling stand Before the judgment seat. 5 Prepare, my soul, to meet thy judge, Thy life throughout survey; From evil cease, and learn the good If Thou wouldst stand that day. 6 Washed in Thy Savior’s blood thy robes Shall be both clean and white; A holy soul can view its judge, And triumph in the sight.
