God's hidden ones

Author: William Croswell Appears in 201 hymnals Topics: Christian Experience First Line: Lord, lead the way the Saviour went Lyrics: 1 Lord, lead the way the Saviour went, By lane and cell obscure, And let love's treasures still be spent, Like his, upon the poor. 2 Like him, through scenes of deep distress, Who bore the world's sad weight, We, in their crowded loneliness, Would seek the desolate. 3 For thou hast placed us side by side In this wide world of ill; And that thy followers may be tried, The poor are with us still. 4 Mean are all offerings we can make; Yet thou hast taught us, Lord, If given for the Saviour's sake, They lose not their reward.

The hour of my departure's come

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 84 hymnals Topics: Christian experience Christian in the prospect of death Lyrics: 1 The hour of my departure’s come; I hear the voice that calls me home; At last, O Lord! let trouble cease, And let thy servant die in peace. 2 The race appointed I have run; The combat’s o’er, the prize is won And now my witness is on high, And now my record’s in the sky. 3 Not in mine innocence I trust; I bow before thee in the dust; And through my Saviour’s blood alone, I look for mercy at thy throne. 4 I leave the world without a tear, Save for the friends I held so dear; To heal their sorrow, Lord, descend, And to the friendless prove a friend. 5 I come, I come, at thy command; I give my spirit to thy hand; Stretch forth thine everlasting arms, And shield me in the last alarms! 6 The hour of my departure’s come; I hear the voice that calls me home: Now, O my God! let trouble cease, Now let thy servant die in peace.

O 'tis enough! I ask no more

Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Christian experience Christian in the prospect of death Lyrics: 1 O 'tis enough! I ask no more, Full of a few sad sinful days, Sated with life, till life is o'er, I languish to conclude my race, And silently resign my breath, And sink into the shades of death. 2 This earth without regret I leave; Impatient for my heav'nly rest; Saviour, my weary soul receive, Take a sad pilgrim to thy breast, I only live, and die, to be Restor'd, resorb'd, and lost in thee. Scripture: Job 8:16

Vital spark of heavenly flame!

Meter: Irregular Appears in 279 hymnals Topics: Christian experience Christian in the prospect of death Lyrics: 1 Vital spark of heavenly flame! Quit, oh quit this mortal frame; Trembling, hoping, ling'ring, flying, O the pain, the bliss of dying! Cease, fond nature, cease thy strife, And let me languish into life. 2 Hark! they whisper, angels say, "Sister spirit, come away;" What is this absorbs me quite? Steals my senses, shuts my sight. Drowns my spirit, draws my breath! Tell me, my soul, can this be death? 3 The world recedes, it disappears! Heaven opens on my eyes--my ears With sounds seraphic ring! Lend, lend your wings, I mount! I fly! O grave, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?

Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin

Author: Charles Wesley Appears in 54 hymnals Topics: Christian Experience Lyrics: Where shall my wondering soul begin? How shall I all to heaven aspire? A slave redeemed from death and sin, a brand plucked from eternal fire, how shall I equal triumphs raise, or sing my great deliverer’s praise? O how shall I the goodness tell, Father, which thou to me hast showed? That I, a child of wrath and hell, I should be called a child of God! Should know, should feel my sins forgiven, blest with this antepast of heaven! And shall I slight my Father’s love, or basely fear his gifts to own? Unmindful of his favors prove, shall I, the hallowed cross to shun, refuse his righteousness to impart, by hiding it within my heart? Outcasts of men, to you I call, harlots, and publicans, and thieves; he spreads his arms to embrace you all, sinners alone his grace receive. No need of Him the righteous have; he came the lost to seek and save. Come, O my guilty brethren, come, groaning beneath your load of sin; his bleeding heart shall make you room, his open side shall take you in. He calls you now, invites you home: Come, O my guilty brethren, come. For you the purple current flowed in pardon from his wounded side, languished for you the eternal God, for you the Prince of Glory died. Believe, and all your sin’s forgiven, only believe--and yours is heaven.
