Jenison, MI, 1919; d. Grand Rapids, MI, 1990) While attending Dutch church services as a child, Post was first introduced to the Genevan psalms, which influenced her later writings. She attended Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she studied with Henry Zylstra. From 1940 to 1942 she taught at the Muskegon Christian Junior High School. For over thirty years Post wrote poetry for the Grand Rapids Press and various church periodicals. She gave many readings of her poetry in churches and schools and has been published in a number of journals and poetry anthologies. Two important collections of her poems are I Never Visited an Artist Before (1977) and the posthumous Sandals, Sails, and Saints (1993). A member of the 1987 Psalter Hymnal Revision Committee, Post was a significant contributor to its array of original texts and paraphrases. Bert Polman

Christopher Newman Hall

1816 - 1902 Person Name: Newman Hall Topics: Advent of Christ To Kingdom Author of ""Brother, King!"" in Laudes Domini Hall, Christopher Newman, LL.B., son of J. Vine Hall, was born at Maidstone, May 22, 1816, and educated at Totteridge School, and Highbury College, London. In 1841 he graduated B.A. at the University of London, and LL.B. in 1856. From 1842 to 1854 he was minister of Albion Church, Hull; and from 1854 he has been in charge of Surrey Chapel, and its continuation, Christ Church, Westminster. He was also chairman of the Congregational Union of England and Wales in 1876. In addition to several prose works, and numerous tracts (one of which, "Come to Jesus," has been translated into 30 languages and has reached a circulation of two millions), he published:— (1) Hymns composed at Bolton Abbey, and Other Rhymes, Lond., Nisbet, 1858; (2) Cloud and Sunshine, Lond., Hamilton, Adams & Co., 1870; (3) Christ Church Hymnal, for the use of the Congregation of Christ Church, Westminster Road, Lond., Nisbet, 1876; (4) Pilgrim Songs in Sunshine and Shade, Lond. 1870 (this is No. 1 with additional verses); (5) Supplemental Pilgrim Songs; and (6) Songs of Earth and Heaven, Lond., Hodder & Stoughton, 1886. In the Christ Church Hymnal, 1876, there are 82 original hymns by Mr. Hall, 10 of which previously appeared in his Hymns composed at Bolton Abbey, &c, 1858. All the 82 hymns are signed “N. H." Of his hymns the most popular are, "Accepting, Lord, Thy gracious call"; "Friend of sinners, Lord of glory"; and "Hallelujah, joyful raise" (q.v.). In addition the following are also in common use outside of his Hymnal:— 1. Come, Lord, to earth again (1876). Advent. 2. Day again is dawning (1872). Morning. 3. Skinner Chávez-Melo

1944 - 1992 Topics: Advent; Jesus Christ Advent; Jesus Christ Return of; Year B Advent 2; Year C Advent 2 Harmonizer of "TAULE" in The New Century Hymnal Skinner Chavez-Melo, an organist, conductor and composer who was music director at the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, died on Saturday at New York Downtown Hospital. He was 47 years old and lived in Manhattan. He died of spinal cancer, said his brother, Juan Francisco. Mr. Chavez-Melo was born in Mexico City, but completed his musical studies in the United States, receiving degrees at Eastern Nazarene College and the Union Theological Seminary, and pursuing further studies at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School. He toured internationally as an organist and conducted orchestras in Mexico, Brazil and the United States. As a composer, he wrote works for organ, choir and orchestra, and contributed hymn settings to several published hymnals, including those of the United Church of Christ and Yale University. He also lectured and presented workshops on Hispanic church music. Besides directing music at St. Rose, Mr. Chavez-Melo conducted the annual Singing Christmas Tree concerts at the South Street Seaport. http://www.nytimes.com/1992/01/28

He became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral under T. E. Jones. After studying music under Stephen Elvey at Oxford, he was appointed organist at St. Columba’s College, a large public school at Rathfarnham, near Dublin, Ireland. He stayed there only a few months before being offered the position of organist at Southwell Minister. From Southwell, he went to Chester as assistant organist to Frederic Gunton. In 1903 he went to America, and during immigration processing, someone gave him a New Testament in Greek. A year later, he joined a Nazarene church in Chicago, Illinois. He then enrolled in a Bible school and university. While in school in California, he began to study Spanish and to work with the Latino community. In 1910 he decided to work in evangelism. Dulwich, London, England, 1915) had a lifelong love of Felix Mendelssohn, sparked when he sang at age sixteen in the first London performance of Elijah, which was directed by Mendelssohn himself. As a young boy, Cummings had been a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral and later sang in the choirs of the Temple Church, Westminster Abbey, and the Chapel Royal. Cummings became a famous tenor–he sang in oratorios and was especially known for his evangelist role in the Bach passions. He taught voice at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Normal College and School for the Blind in London and was also an accomplished organist.
