O God, My Refuge, Hear My Cries

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 52 hymnals Lyrics: 1. O God, my refuge, hear my cries, Behold my flowing tears; For earth and hell my hurt devise, And triumph in my fears. 2. Their rage is leveled at my life, My soul with guilt they load, And fill my thoughts with inward strife, To shake my hopes in God. 3. With inward pain my heart-strings sound, I groan with every breath; Horror and fear beset me round Amongst the shades of death. 4. O were I like a feathered dove, And innocence had wings, I’d fly, and make a long remove From all these restless things. 5. Let me to some wild desert go, And find a peaceful home; Where storms of malice never blow, Temptations never come. 6. Vain hopes, and vain inventions all To ’scape the rage of hell! The mighty God on whom I call, Can save me here as well. 7. By morning light I’ll seek His face, At noon repeat my cry; The night shall hear me ask His grace, Nor will He long deny. 8. God shall preserve my soul from fear, Or shield me when afraid; Ten thousand angels must appear, If He command their aid. 9. I cast my burdens on the Lord, The Lord sustains them all; My courage rests upon His Word, That saints shall never fall. 10. My highest hopes shall not be vain, My lips shall spread His praise; While cruel and deceitful men Scarce live out half their days. Used With Tune: BURFORD Text Sources: The Psalms of David, 1719

O Saviour, whom that holy morn

Author: Reginald Heber Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 13 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Saviour, whom that holy morn Gave to our world below, To mortal want and labor born, And more than mortal woe! 2 Incarnate Word, by every grief, By each temptation tried, Who lived to yield our ills relief, And to redeem us died! 3 If gaily clothed and proudly fed, In dangerous wealth we dwell, Remind us of Thy manger bed And lowly cottage cell. 4 If prest by poverty severe, In anxious want we pine, O may Thy Spirit whisper near, How poor a lot was Thine! 5 Through fickle fortune's various scene, From sin preserve us free; Like us Thou hast a mourner been, May we rejoice with Thee. O Lord, unto my prayer give ear

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Lord, unto my prayer give ear, my cry let come to thee; 2 and in the day of my distress hide not thy face from me. Give ear to me; what time I call, to answer me make haste: 3 for, as an hearth, my bones are burnt, my days, like smoke, do waste. 4 My heart within me smitten is, like grass is withered; because for very grief I do forget to eat my bread. 5 By reason of my cries and groans my bones cleave to my skin. 6 Like pelican in wilderness forsaken I have been: I like an owl 'mid ruins am, that nightly there doth moan; 7 I watch, like sparrow that doth moan; on the house-top alone. 8 My bitter enemies all the day reproaches cast on me; and, being mad at me, with rage against me sworn they be. 9 For I did ashes eat as bread, and, in my sorrow deep; my drink I also mingled have with tears that I did weep. 10 Thine indignation and thy wrath did cause this grief and pain; for thou hast lifted me on high, and cast me down again. 11 My days are like unto a shade, which doth dried and withered, even like unto the grass. 12 But thou, O Lord, dost sit enthroned, eternal is thy sway; and thy remembrance shall endure from age to age alway. Scripture: Psalm 102:1-12 Used With Tune: BURFORD

When Troubles Come

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 3 hymnals First Line: When troubles come and hopes depart Lyrics: 1 When troubles come and hopes depart, in mercy, Lord, arise; the ruined landscape of my heart lies bare before your eyes. 2 Where human pride is humbled low and crushed beneath your hand, your solace, Lord, again bestow and heal this broken land. 3 Though darkness seems to hide your face amid earth's sin and pain, break through the clouds, O God of grace, restore my soul again. 4 The banner of your love unfurled proclaims a shelt'ring arm; no foes in all this fallen world can bring your people harm. 5 In holiness your word goes forth from that eternal throne: to east and west, to south and north, your glory rules alone. 6 Frail human strength is nothing worth, beset by evil pow'rs, yet with the God of all the earth the victory is ours! Topics: Affliction; Defeat; Mercy; Peace; Rejection; Restoration; Thanksgiving Scripture: Psalm 60 Used With Tune: BURFORD
