Day of wrath, that Day of mourning!

Author: Thomas de Celano; William Joseph Irons Appears in 109 hymnals Topics: Death and Eternity Judgment Lyrics: 1 Day of wrath, that Day of mourning! See fulfilled the prophet's warning, Heaven and earth in ashes burning! 2 O what fear man's bosom rendeth, When from heaven the Judge descendeth, On whose sentence all dependeth? 3 Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth, Through earth's sepulchres it ringeth, All before the throne it bringeth. 4 Death is struck, and nature quaking; All creation is awaking, To its Judge an answer making. 5 Lo, the Book, exactly worded, Wherein all hath been recorded; Thence shall judgment be awarded. 6 When the Judge His seat attaineth, And each hidden deed arraigneth, Nothing unavenged remaineth. 7 What shall I, frail man, be pleading? Who for me be interceding, When the just are mercy needing? 8 King of Majesty tremendous, Who dost free salvation send us, Fount of pity, then befriend us! 9 Think, kind Jesus! my salvation Caused Thy wondrous Incarnation; Leave me not to reprobation! 10 Faint and weary thou hast sought me, On the Cross of suff'ring bought me; Shall such grace in vain be brought me? 11 Righteous Judge of retribution, Grant Thy gift of absolution, Ere that day's dread execution. 12 Guilty, now I our my moaning, All my shame with anguish owning! Spare, O God, Thy suppliant, groaning! 13 Thou the woman gavest remission, Heard'st the dying thief's petition: Hopeless else were my condition. 14 Worthless are my prayers and sighing, Yet, good Lord, in grace complying, Rescue me from fires undying! 15 With Thy favored sheep, O place me! Nor amid the goats abase me: But to Thy right hand upraise me. 16 While the wicked are confounded, Doomed to flames of woe unbounded, Call me, with Thy saints surrounded. 17 Bows my heart in meek submission, Strewn with ashes of contrition; Succor Thou my lost condition! 18 Day of sorrows, Day of weeping, When, in dust no longer sleeping, Man awakes in Thy dread keeping! 19 To the Rest Thou didst prepare me, On Thy Cross, O Christ, upbear me? Spare, O God, in mercy spare me! Used With Tune: DIES IRAE, DIES ILLA

Few, few and evil are thy days

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Life and death and judgment Lyrics: Few, few and evil are thy days, Man, of a woman born; Peril and trouble haunt thy ways; Forth, like a flower at morn, The tender infant springs to light, Youth blossoms to the breeze, Age, withering age, is cropt ere night; Man like a shadow flees. 215 And dost thou look on such an one? Will God to judgment call A worm, for what a worm hath done Against the Lord of all? As fail the waters from the deep, As summer-brooks run dry, Man lieth down in dreamless sleep, His life is vanity. Man lieth down, no more to wake, Till yonder arching sphere Shall, with a roll of thunder, break, And nature disappear. O hide me, till Thy wrath be past, Thou who canst slay or save! Hide me, where hope may anchor fast, In my Redeemer's grave. Scripture: Job 14:1-3

And am I only born to die?

Meter: Irregular Appears in 125 hymnals Topics: Holy Spirit The certaintiy of death and Judgment Lyrics: 1 And am I only born to die? And must I suddenly comply With nature’s stern decree? What after death for me remains? Celestial joys, or hellish pains, To all eternity? 2 How then ought I on earth to live, While God prolongs the kind reprieve, And props the house of clay; My sole concern, my single care, To watch, and tremble, and prepare Against the fatal day! 3 No room for mirth or trifling here, For worldly hope, or worldly fear, If life so soon is gone; If now the Judge is at the door, And all mankind must stand before Th'inexorable throne! 4 No matter which my thoughts employ; A moment’s misery, or joy; But oh! when both shall end, Where shall I find my destin'd place? Shall I my everlasting days With fiends or angels spend? 5 Nothing is worth a thought beneath But how I may escape the death That never, never dies! How make mine own election sure; And when I fail on earth, secure A mansion in the skies. 6 Jesus, vouchsafe a pitying ray, Be thou my guide, be thou my way To glorious happiness! Ah! write the pardon on my heart! And whensoe’er I hence depart, Let me depart in peace.

Stoop down, my thoughts, that us'd to rise

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 122 hymnals Topics: Holy Spirit The certaintiy of death and Judgment Lyrics: 1 Stoop down, my thoughts, that us'd to rise, Converse a while with death; Think how a gasping mortal lies, And pants away his breath. 2 His quivering lip hangs feebly down, His pulses faint and few, Then, speechless, with a doleful groan He bids the world adieu. 3 But, O the soul that never dies! At once it leaves the clay! Ye thoughts, pursue it where it flies, And track its wondrous way. 4 Up to the courts where angels dwell, It mounts triumphing there; Or devils plunge it down to hell In infinite despair. 5 And must my body faint and die? And must this soul remove? O for some guardian angel nigh, To bear it safe above! 6 Jesus, to thy dear faithful hand My naked soul I trust, And my flesh waits for thy command To drop into my dust.
