Aaron Crossley Hobart Seymour

1789 - 1870 Person Name: A. C. H. Seymour, 1789-1870 Author of "Jesus, immortal King, arise" in Methodist Hymn and Tune Book Seymour, Aaron Crossley Hobart, son of John Crossley Seymour, M.A., Vicar of Cahirelly, Diocese of Cashel (and elder brother of the Rev. Michael Hobart Seymour, author of several works on the Roman controversy), was born in the county of Limerick, Dec. 19, 1789. From an early age he gave much attention to literary pursuits, and at the age of 21 he published his Vital Christianity exhibited in a Series of Letters on the most Important Subjects of Religion, addressed to Young Persons, 1810. This work, written during an illness, contains several of his hymns and other poetical pieces. He also edited a new edition of Dr. Gillies's Life of Whitefield, and wrote a "Memoir," which was prefixed to the Reliques of Ancient Irish Poetry, by Miss Charlotte Brooke, 1816. His most important work was his Life and Times of Selina, Countess of Huntingdon, 2 vols., 1839. He resided for some time in Naples (circa 1839-1847), and then at Bristol. He died Oct., 1870. George Pope Morris

1802 - 1864 Person Name: George P. Morris Author of "O help us, Lord; each hour of need" in The Hymnal Morris, George, was born in Philadelphia, Oct. 10, 1802. In early life he removed to New York, where, in 1822, he became the editor of the New York Mirror magazine. On that magazine, together with The Home Journal, he was associated with N. P. Willis. His works include The Deserted Bride, and Other Poems, 1843; Poems, 1853; American Melodies; and some prose pieces. He is best known as a writer of songs, one of which, "Woodman, spare that tree," is very popular. His hymns, "Man dieth and wasteth away " (Victory over Death"; and "Searcher of hearts! from mine erase", Lent), are in a few American collections, as the Songs for the Sanctuary, 1865, and the Methodist Hymnal, 1878. Elizabeth McEwen Shields

1879 - 1962 Person Name: Elizabeth McE. Shields Author of "The Bible Is a Treasure Book" in Hymns for Primary Worship Shields, Elizabeth McEwen. (Camden, South Carolina, September 22, 1879--May 5, 1962, Asheville, North Carolina). She was named for her grandmother, Elizabeth McEwen of South Carolina. Director, Children's Work of the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education; Chair, children's section of what is now known as the National Council of Churches. Published many books for children, including Junior Hymns and Songs and Worship and Conduct Songs. --Tina Schneider, from information in the DNAH Archives, which includes correspondence from Elizabeth McEwen Shield's sister.

William Watkins Reid

1890 - 1983 Author of "Dear Lord, to Whom in Other Days" in My God Is There, Controlling, and Other Hymns and Poems Reid, William Watkins, Sr. (Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, October 15, 1890--February 18, 1983, Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania). Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions. Used the title of "My God is There, Controlling," the Society has published 65 of his hymns, and several others were published in the Society's "searches", for new hymns.
