Whether the Word Be Preached or Read

Author: Charles Wesley Hymnal: The United Methodist Hymnal #595 (1989) Topics: The Book of the Church : Holy Scripture Lyrics: Whether the Word be preached or read, no saving benefit I gain from empty sounds or letters dead; unprofitable all and vain, unless by faith thy word I hear and see its heavenly character. Unmixed with faith, the Scripture gives no comfort, life, or light to see, but me in darker darkness leaves, implunged in deeper misery, overwhelmed with nature's sorest ills. The Spirit saves, the letter kills. If God enlighten through his Word, I shall my kind Enlightener bless; but void and naked of my Lord, what are all verbal promises? Nothing to me, till faith divine inspire, inspeak, and make them mine. Jesus, the appropriating grace 'tis thine on sinners to bestow. Open mine eyes to see thy face, open my heart thyself to know. And then I through thy Word obtain sure present, and eternal gain. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 Languages: English

O Word of God Incarnate

Author: William W. How Hymnal: The United Methodist Hymnal #598 (1989) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Topics: The Book of the Church : Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1. O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky: we praise you for the radiance that from the hallowed page, a lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age. 2. The church from you, our Savior, received the gift divine, and still that light is lifted o'er all the earth to shine. It is the sacred vessel where gems of truth are stored; it is the heaven-drawn picture of Christ, the living Word. 3. The Scripture is a banner before God's host unfurled; it is a shining beacon above the darkling world. It is the chart and compass that o'er life's surging tide, mid mists and rocks and quicksands, to you, O Christ, will guide. 4. O make your church, dear Savior, a lamp of purest gold, to bear before the nations your true light as of old. O teach your wandering pilgrims by this their path to trace, till, clouds and darkness ended, they see you face to face. Languages: English Tune Title: MUNICH

How Shall They Hear the Word of God

Author: Michael Perry Hymnal: The United Methodist Hymnal #649 (1989) Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.8 Topics: The Book of the Church : Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1 How shall they hear the word of God unless the truth is told? How shall the sinful be set free, the sorrowful consoled? To all who speak the truth today, impart your Spirit, Lord, we pray. 2 How shall they call to God for help unless they have believed? How shall the poor be given hope, the prisoner reprieved? To those who help the blind to see, give light and love and clarity. 3 How shall the gospel be proclaimed that sinners may repent? How shall the world find peace at last if heralds are not sent? So send us, Lord, for we rejoice to speak of Christ with life and voice. Deep in the Shadows of the Past

Author: Brian Wren Hymnal: The Faith We Sing #2246 (2001) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: The Community of Faith The Book of the Church: Holy Scripture Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown; a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods they met a mystery, invisible, without a name: "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; and by their tents, around their fires, in story, song and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Exodus to Pentecost the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, or with their letters and laments, their prophecy and praise recovered, kindled and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders, long ago, who sifted, copied and preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its story yet our promise, strength and call, the model of emerging faith, alive with hope for all.
