Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted

Author: Thomas Kelly Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #117 (1926) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Church Year Holy Week Lyrics: 1 Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See Him dying on the tree! 'Tis the Christ by man rejected; Yes, my soul, 'tis He, 'tis He! Many hands were raised to wound Him, None would interpose to save; But the deepest stroke that pierced Him Was the stroke that Justice gave. 2 Ye who think of sin but lightly, Nor suppose the evil great, Here may view its nature rightly, Here its guilt may estimate. Mark the Sacrifice appointed! See who bears the awful load! 'Tis the Word, the Lord's Anointed, Son of Man, and Son of God. 3 Here we have a firm foundation, Here the refuge of the lost; Christ the Rock of our salvation: Christ the Name of which we boast. Lamb of God, for sinners wounded! Sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded Who on Him their hope have built. Amen. Scripture: Isaiah 53:4 Languages: English Tune Title: WO IST JESUS, MEIN VERLANGEN

O Perfect Life of Love

Author: Henry Williams Baker Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #118 (1926) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Topics: Church Year Holy Week First Line: O perfect life of love! Lyrics: 1 O perfect life of love! All, all is finished now; All that He left His throne above To do for us below. 2 No work is left undone Of all the Father willed; His toil, His sorrows, one by one, The Scripture have fulfilled. 3 No pain that we can share But He has felt its smart: All forms of human grief and care Have pierced that tender heart. 4 In perfect love He dies; For me He dies, for me; O all-atoning Sacrifice, I cling by faith to Thee. 5 Work, then, O Lord, in me, As Thou for me hast wrought; And let my love the answer be To grace Thy love has brought. Amen. Scripture: John 19:28-30 Languages: English Tune Title: GORTON

O sacred head, sore wounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676; Robert Bridges, 1844-1930 Hymnal: Common Praise #119 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Passiontide and Holy Week Lyrics: 1 O sacred head, sore wounded, defiled and put to scorn; O kingly head, surrounded with mocking crown of thorn: what sorrow mars thy grandeur? Can death thy bloom deflower? O countenance whose splendour the hosts of heaven adore. 2 Thy beauty, long desirèd, hath vanished from our sight; thy power is all expirèd, and quenched the Light of light. Ah me! for whom thou diest, hide not so far thy grace: show me, O Love most highest, the brightness of thy face. 3 I pray thee, Jesus, own me, me, Shepherd good, for thine; who to thy fold hast won me, and fed with truth divine. Me guilty, me refuse not, incline thy face to me, this comfort that I lose not, on earth to comfort thee. 4 In thy most bitter passion my heart to share doth cry, with thee for my salvation upon the cross to die. Ah, keep my heart thus movèd to stand thy cross beneath, to mourn thee, well-belovèd, yet thank thee for thy death. 5 My days are few, O fail not, with thine immortal power, to hold me that I quail not in death's most fearful hour: that I may fight befriended, and see in my last strife to me thine arms extended upon the cross of life. Thine Agony, O Lord, Is O'er

Author: Johan Olof Wallin Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #119 (1926) Meter: 8.8.7.8.7 Topics: Church Year Holy Week Lyrics: 1 Thine agony, O Lord, is o'er, And victory forevermore Is ours through Thy great passion. Earth had for Thee no peace in store Till peace was our possession. 2 Now rest Thee, gentle Shepherd blet, Who 'mid this throng hast found no rest, Nor in a home abided. The shelter life from Thee withheld The grave alone provided. 3 O silent grave! O blest retreat, A refuge for my Saviour meet, No longer dark and narrow! Like Him, I enter thee content, Released from toil and sorrow. 4 O sleep of death, O night profound, My Lord hath set for thee a bound: His promise I remember. Like Him, triumphant I shall come From out that peaceful chamber. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: PÅ DIG JAG HOPPAS, HERRE KÄR!

O sacred head, surrounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676; H. W. Baker, 1821-1877 Hymnal: Common Praise #120 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Passiontide and Holy Week Lyrics: 1 O sacred head, surrounded by crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding head, so wounded, so shamed and put to scorn! Death's pallid hue comes o'er thee, the glow of life decays; yet angel-hosts adore thee, and tremble as they gaze. 2 Thy comeliness and vigour is withered up and gone, and in thy wasted figure I see death drawing on. O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesu, all grace supplying, turn thou thy face on me. 3 In this thy bitter passion, good Shepherd, think of me with thy most sweet compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath thy cross abiding for ever would I rest, in thy dear love confiding, and with thy presence blest. Scripture: Isaiah 52:2 Languages: English Tune Title: PASSION CHORALE

There is a green hill far away

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander, 1818-1895 Hymnal: Common Praise #123 (2000) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Passiontide and Holy Week Lyrics: 1 There is a green hill far away, without a city wall, where the dear Lord was crucified, who died to save us all. 2 We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear, but we believe it was for us he hung and suffered there. 3 He died that we might be forgiven, he died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by his precious blood. 4 There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin; he only could unlock the gate of heaven, and let us in. 5 O dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too, and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do. In Anguish Jesus Prayed Alone

Author: Barbara Hamm Hymnal: New Hymns of Hope #123 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Holy Week Lyrics: 1 In anguish Jesus prayed alone the night he was betrayed; and Judas marked him with a kiss to keep the bargain made. Then Jesus, taken under guard, was questioned and accused; the chief priests said he was to blame, and Jesus was abused. 2 They sent him on to Pilate's court, for Pilate was the judge; in Jesus he could find no fault, despite the chief priests' grudge. The people clamored for his death and would not be denied; so Pilate, yielding to their cry, hand Jesus crucified. 3 The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it on his head. They dressed him in a purple cloak – "Your Jewish king," they said. They nailed him to a Roman cross, a bandit on each side; betrayed, forsaken, mocked, and scorned, he breathed his last – and died.
