Who Is My Neighbor?

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 14.14.4.7.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: James 2:8 First Line: "Who is my neighbor?" a lawyer asked Jesus, to test him Lyrics: “Who is my neighbor?” a lawyer asked Jesus, to test him. So Jesus told him a story to answer his question: Lonely the way… Lonely the traveler one day… Robbers attacked him and left him. First down the road came a priest who just chose to ignore him. Next came a Levite who wouldn’t do anything for him. Then one despised, Hated in everyone’s eyes, Knelt down to heal and restore him. Tending the wounds of the man, the Samaritan labored. He was the one with compassion, the one in God’s favor. Not by a creed But by responding to need, He proved to be the good neighbor. Topics: Jesus Christ Teachings Used With Tune: LOBE DEN HERREN

Be Doers of the Word of God

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: James 2:1-7 Lyrics: Be doers of the word of God, Not simply those who hear. Be ones who look into God’s word, Obey, and persevere. Be quick to listen, slow to speak, And slow to anger, too. Put wrath aside; instead, be meek And let God work in you. Religion that is undefiled, Religion that is pure Will reach to help the orphaned child And welcome all the poor. If people come here poorly dressed, To judge them is a sin. The rich aren’t better than the rest; God welcomes poor ones in. O Christ, you save us by God’s grace From having to obey. Then freed to love, we can embrace A life that seeks your way. May we be doers of the word, May faith shine through our deeds; And as we seek to trust in God, May ethics follow creeds. Topics: Grace of God; Justice; Life in Christ Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE
