Triumph, Ye Heavens!

Author: Gerhard Tersteegen Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #37 (1926) Meter: 14.14.4.7.8 Topics: Christ Incarnation; Incarnation of Christ First Line: Triumph, ye heavens! rejoice ye with high adoration! Lyrics: 1 Triumph, ye heavens! rejoice ye with high adoration! Sing to the Lord, to the Saviour, in glad exultation! Angels give ear! God unto men draweth near, Bringing to lost ones salvation. 2 God in man’s nature! O mystery past comprehending! Now is the temple thrown wide and the incense ascending! Christ is the way! We who were once far away, Now at His footstool are bending. 3 Hast Thou, O Holy One, deigned of my need to be thinking? Chosen me, called me, the waters of life to be drinking? Shall not my mind Fullness of blessing here find, Deep in humility sinking? 4 Faithful Immanuel! let me Thy glories be telling; Ever, my Saviour, be Thou in mine inmost heart dwelling. With me abide; Teach me to stay at Thy side, Where the love-fountain is welling. Amen. Languages: English Tune Title: LOBE DEN HERREN

High let us swell our tuneful notes

Hymnal: Hymns, Selected and Original #108 (1828) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Topics: Christ Incarnation Lyrics: 1 High let us swell our tuneful notes, And join th' angelic throng; For angels no such love have known, T' awake a cheerful song. 2 Good will to guilty men is shown And peace on earth is giv'n; For, lo! th' incarnate Saviour comes, With messages from heav'n. 3 Justice and grace, with sweet accord, His rising beams adorn: Let heav'n and earth in concert join, Now such a child is born. 4 Glory to God, in highest strains, In highest worlds be paid! His glory by our lips proclaim'd, And by our lives display'd! 5 When shall we reach those blissful realms, Where Christ exalted reigns, And learn of the celestial choir Their own immortal strains?

Ah, Holy Jesus, How Hast Thou Offended?

Author: Robert Bridges; Johann Heermann Hymnal: The Hymnal and Order of Service #115 (1926) Meter: 11.11.11.5 Topics: Christ Incarnation First Line: Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended Lyrics: 1 Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended, That man to judge Thee hath in hate pretended? By foes derided, by Thine own rejected, O most afflicted! 2 Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon Thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee! ’Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied Thee: I crucified Thee. 3 Lo, the good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; The slave hath sinnèd, and the Son hath suffered; For man’s atonement, while he nothing heedeth, God intercedeth. 4 For me, kind Jesus, was Thine incarnation, Thy mortal sorrow, and Thy life’s oblation; Thy death of anguish, and Thy bitter passion, For my salvation. 5 Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay Thee, I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee: Think on Thy pity and Thy love unswerving, Not my deserving. Amen. Scripture: John 10:11 Languages: English Tune Title: HERZLIEBSTER JESU

In the bleak midwinter

Author: Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) Hymnal: Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise #305 (2008) Meter: Irregular Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Christmas and Epiphany Lyrics: 1 In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago. 2 Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain; heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ. 3 Enough for him whom cherubim worship night and day, a breastful of milk and a mangerful of hay; enough for him whom angels fall down before, the ox and ass and camel which adore. 4 Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss. 5 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him, give my heart. Scripture: 1 Kings 8:27 Languages: English Tune Title: CRANHAM

Praise the one who breaks the darkness

Author: Rusty Edwards (b. 1955) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #348 (2005) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Life in Christ Christ Incarnate - Public Ministry Lyrics: 1 Praise the One who breaks the darkness with a liberating light. Praise the One who frees the prisoners turning blindness into sight. Praise the One who preached the Gospel, curing every dread disease, calming storms, and feeding thousands with the very bread of peace. 2 Praise the One who blessed the children with a strong yet gentle word. Praise the One who drove out demons with a piercing, two-edged sword. Praise the One who brings cool water to the desert's burning sand: From this well comes living water, quenching thirst in every land. 3 Praise the one true love incarnate, Christ, who suffered in our place. Jesus died and rose for many that we may know God by grace. Let us sing for joy and gladness, seeing what our God has done. Praise the one redeeming glory, praise the One who makes us one. Scripture: 1 Peter 2:24 Languages: English Tune Title: JOEL
