I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #666 (2013) Topics: Children and All-Age Worship; Church year Passiontide; Fear; Future hope; Jesus coming again; Jesus Life and Ministry; Other Saints and Festivals St Stephen; Other Saints and Festivals Joseph of Nazareth; Proper 22 Year C; The First Sunday of Christmas Year A; The Third Sunday of Easter Year B Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Light of the minds that know him

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926); St Augustine of Hippo (354-430) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #709 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Easter; Devotion; Discipleship; Future hope; God Will of; Heaven; Jesus Life and Ministry; Light; Self-offering; The Second Sunday before Lent Year B Lyrics: 1 Light of the minds that know him, may Christ be light to mine! my sun in risen splendour, my light of truth divine; my guide in doubt and darkness, my true and living way, my clear light ever shining, my dawn of heaven's day. 2 Life of the souls that love him, may Christ be ours indeed! the living bread from heaven on whom our spirits feed; who died for love of sinners to bear our guilty load, and make of life's brief journey a new Emmaus road. 3 Strength of the wills that serve him, may Christ be strength to me, who stilled the storm and tempest, who calmed the tossing sea; his Spirit's power to move me, his will to master mine, his cross to carry daily and conquer in his sign. 4 May it be ours to know him that we may truly love, and loving, fully serve him as serve the saints above; till in that home of glory with fadeless splendour bright, we serve in perfect freedom our strength, our life, our light. Year by year, from past to future

Author: Alan Luff (b. 1928) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #829 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Topics: Death and Bereavement; Future hope; New Year; Other Saints and Festivals Thomas the Apostle; Stages of Life Lyrics: 1 Year by year, from past to future worship marks our upward climb, sets the rhythm of our journey to eternity through time: though the outward things diminish we are held more firm by grace, following God's heavenward calling and the everlasting prize. 2 As we seek to weave life's fabric on the lengthening loom of days, may Christ guide the threads that form it, be the pattern it displays; may the Father, master craftsman, sorrowing over each mistake, plan for us a new perfection from the ugliness we make. 3 Though we long for the adventure of the mystery of bliss, to the pilgrim's eyes the pathway breaks, and ends in death's abyss; but within the dark are waiting hands that bear the print of nails, which will hold us safe and bear us where the worship never fails. Scripture: John 14:1-4 Languages: English Tune Title: EBENEZER
