I Love the Lord, His Strength is Mine

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Glory And Majesty Of God; Judgment; God of Christ our Refuge; Trust Lyrics: 1 I love the Lord, His strength is mine; He is my God, I trust His grace; My fortress high, my shield divine, My Savior and my hiding-place. 2 My prayer to God shall still be raised When troubles thick around me close; The Lord, most worthy to be praised, Will rescue me from all my foes. 3 When, floods of evil raging near, Down nigh to dearth my soul was brought, I cried to God in all my fear; He heard and great deliverance wrought. 4 He came: the earth's foundations quake, The hills are shaken from their place, Thick smoke and fire devouring break In anger dread before His face. 5 Descending through the bending skies, With gloom and darkness under Him, Forth through the storm Jehovah flies As on the wings of cherubim. 6 Thick darkness hides Him from the view, And swelling clouds His presence veil, Until His glorious light breaks through In lighting flash and glistening hail. 7 Jehovah's thunders fill the heaven, The dreadful voice of God Most High; With shafts of light the clouds are riven, His foes, dismayed, in terror fly. 8 The raging torrents overflow, And sweep the world's foundations bare, Because Thy blasts of anger blow, O Lord of earth and sea and air. 9 He took me from the whelming waves Of bitter hate and sore distress; The Lord, my stay and Helper, saves, Thought mighty foes around me press. 10 From direful straits He set me free, He saved the man of His delight; For good the Lord rewarded me, Because I kept His ways aright. Scripture: Psalm 18 Used With Tune: MENDON

Blest is He Who Loves God's Precepts

Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Fear of God; Judgment; Law of God; Meditation; Prosperity; Punishment Of The Wicked; Rewards of Righteousness; Righteous And Wicked Contrasted Lyrics: 1 Blest is he who loves God's precepts, Who from sin restrains his feet, He who will not stand with sinners, He who shuns the scorners' seat. 2 Blest is he who makes the statutes Of the Lord his chief delight, In God's law rejoicing, divinely perfect, Meditating day and night. 3 He is like a tree well planted By the flowing river's side, Ever green of leaf and fruitful– Thus shall all his works abide. 4 Like the driven chaff the wicked Shall be swept from off the land; With the just they shall not gather, Nor shall in the judgment stand. 5 Well the Lord will guard the righteous, For their way to Him is known; But the way of evildoers Shall by Him be overthrown. Scripture: Psalm 1 Used With Tune: REDEEMER

Bless'd is he, who fears the LORD

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Bless'd is he, who fears the LORD, And does his Laws obye, Great his Seed shall be on Earth, His Race shall not decay. Crown'd with Wealth his House shall be, To Mercy still inclin'd; Though in Trouble, he shall shine, The Blessing of Mankind. 2 Ort he lendeth to the Poor, His Words are always just; And his Glory shall survive, Though he should sleep in Dust. Him ill Tidings shall not move, Whose Heart on GOD relies; But in Safety see the Fall Of all his Enemies. 3 To the Needy he bestows, And doth their Wants supply; Thus his Righteousness shall last, His Horn be rais'd on high. This the Wicked shall behold, And gnash their Teeth in Pain; Whilst their Hopes but fruitless prove, And all their Wishes vain. Scripture: Psalm 112 Used With Tune: [Bless'd is he, who fears the Lord]

How blest is he who ne'er consents to walk

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk By ill Advice nor dares to stand and talk In Sinners' Way, their Vice and Cause maintaining Nor sits with Scorners, Things divine profaning: But in GOD's sacred Law takes great Delight, Still reads by Day and meditates by Night. 2 Like some fair Tree, fix'd by the River's Side, Which bends with Fruit, and spreads its Foliage wide; So shall he flourish, Heav'n his Cause defending, And sweet Success his good Designs attending: In vain the Tempest strives to shake his Leaf, The Son of Joy breaks thro' the clouds of Grief. 3 Not to the Wicked; they no Root shall find, But fly like Chaff before the rapid Wind. The Lord hath not their evil Ways approved, Their Race shall therefore from the Earth be moved. They shall not stand in GOD's most holy Sight, Who only loves the Man that seeketh Right. 4 When GOD with Glory shall in Judgment come, A conscious Guilt shall strike the Sinner dumb; Nor to the Wicked will he grant a Station, Among the pure and righteous Congregation: The Ways of Justice, thus, to Bliss shall tend, Whilst Sinners' Paths must in their Ruin end. Scripture: Psalm 1 Used With Tune: [How blest is he, who ne'er consents to walk]

Through all the Scenes of Life

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Through all the Scenes of Life, As well in Trouble as in Joy, The Praises of my GOD shall still. My Heart and Tongue employ. His Goodness I'll declare, 'Till ass that are with Woes oppress'd, From my Example Comfort take, And charm their Griefs to rest. 2 O magnify the LORD! And bless with me, his holy Name; His faithful Word is ever sure, His Truth is still the same: For when to him I cry'd, With heavy Woes encompass'd round, He heard my Voice, and in his Love, I soon a Refuge found. 3 Their dropping Hearts were eas'd; We look'd to him alone for Aid, Desir'd Success in ev'ry Face, A chearful Air display'd. "Behold, said they, and see "The Man whom Providence reliev'd, "So dang'rously beset with Woes, "So wond'rously retriev'd!" Part II 4 The Hosts of GOD encamp Around the Dwellings of the Just; Deliv'rance he affords to all Who in his Succour trust. O taste his wond'rous Love! And soon Experience will decide, How bless'd they are, and only they, Who in his Truth confide. 5 Oh fear him all ye Saints! And you'll have nothing else to fear; Make you his Service your Delight, He'll make your Wants his Care. While Lions lack their Prey, The bounteous LORD will Food provide, For those as put their Trust in him, And see their Wants supply'd. 6 Ye proudly dispos'd, Approach, and my Instruction hear, I'll teach you the true Discipline Of his religious Fear: Let him who Life desires, And many prosp'rous Days would see; From sland'rous Language keep his Tongue, His Lips from Falshood free. 7 The crooked Paths of Vice Decline, and Virtue's Ways pursue; Establish Peace where 'tis begun, And where 'tis lost, renew. The LORD from Heav'n beholds, The Just with favourable Eyes; And, when distress'd, his gracious Ear, Is open to their Cries. Part IIi 8 GOD turns his wrathful Look On those whom Mercy don't reclaim; To cut them off, and from the Earth Blot out their very Name. When in Distress they cry, In Mercy he will hear his Saints, And with a providential Care, Attend to their Complaints. 9 The LORD is always nigh, With Balm, to heal the broken Heart; And to the contrite Spirit still, His Comfort to impart. The Wicked often strive, But vain is always their Desire; When they against the Just and True, Maliciously conspire. 10 For under all the Weight, Of sore Afflictions they endure, The LORD will still preserve his Saints, And keep their Bones secure. The Wicked from their Arts, Their speedy Ruin shall derive; While righteous Men, whom they detest, Shall them and theirs survive. 11 For GOD the Souls shall keep, Of those who on His Truth depend; To them and their Posterity, His Blessings shall descend. Scripture: Psalm 34 Used With Tune: [Through all the scenes of life]

Thy wonted Mercy, LORD, to me extend!

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prophecies Predictions of God's Judgment upon the Ungodly and Wicked Lyrics: 1 Thy wonted Mercy, LORD, to me extend! On thy Protection solely I depend; O let thy shelt'ring Wings thy Servant cover! To thee I fly, do thou my Soul defend, 'Till this outrageous Storm hath passed over. 2 To thy Tribunal, sov'reign Judge! I run, Who in my Cause hath wond'rous Things begun; Then let thy Arm from Heav'n, be my protection, Let all my foes thro' Sahme my Presence shun, And be thy sacred Truth my sure Direction. 3 For daily I with savage Men converse, Who are like hungry Lions wild and fierce, Whose Teeth are like sharp Spears on high erected, Whose Words my Soul, like Darts envenom'd pierce, Or two-edg'd Swords, against my Life directed. Part II 4 Be thou, O GOD of Hosts! exalted high, And let thy Glory fill both Earth and Sky! For they a Net had for my soul prepared; But now I know thy Help is ever nigh, Since in that Net thy find themselves ensnared. 5 My Heart is fix'd, O GOD, 'tis fully bent, To thee my thankful Tribute to present; My Voice, in lofty Anthems shall be raised. Awake my Harp and Lute, with joint Consent, And with the early Dawn let GOD be praised. 6 Thy worthy Praises, LORD, I will resound, To all the list'ning Tribes and Nations round; Thy Mercy still the highest Heav'n transcending. With tend'rest Love, my GOD, thou dost abound, Thy Truth beyond th'aspiring Clouds ascending. 7 Be thou, O GOD of Hosts! exalted high. And as thy Glory fills the radient Sky' So let it be thro' Earth's Extent displayed, 'Till all Mankind confess thee ever nigh, 'Till as in Heav'n, on Earth thou art obey'd. Scripture: Psalm 57 Used With Tune: [Thy wonted Mercy, Lord, to me extend]
