Farewell To A Missionary

Author: James Montgomery, 1771-1854, alt. Appears in 2 hymnals First Line: Home, kindred, friends and country, these Lyrics: 1 Home, kindred, friends and country, these Are things with which we never part; From clime to clime, o’er land and seas, We bear them with us in our heart; And yet ’tis hard to feel resigned When these, all these, are left behind. 2 But when the pilgrim’s staff we take, And follow Christ from shore to shore, Gladly for Him we all forsake, Press on, and only look before: Though humbled nature mourns her loss, The spirit glories in the Cross. 3 It is no sin, like man, to weep, E’en Jesus wept o’er Lazarus, dead; Or yearn for home beyond the deep, He had not where to lay His head: The patriot’s tears will He condemn, Who wept o’er lost Jerusalem? 4 Take up your cross, and say, "Farewell!" Go forth without the camp to Him, Who left Heav’n’s throne with men to dwell, Who died His murderers to redeem: Oh! tell His name in every ear; Doubt not—the dead themselves will hear; 5 Hear, and come forth to life anew, Then, while the Gentile courts they fill, Shall not your Savior’s words stand true? Home, kindred, friends and country still, In earth’s last desert you shall find, Yet lose not those you left behind. Servant of God and Son of Man

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Servant of God and Son of Man, Eternal Son of God Most High, Fulfill the great redeeming plan, Which brought you, Savior, from the sky, Anointed by his Spirit and sealed, With all His glorious fullness filled. 2. His soul’s delight, his best beloved, Give us yourself and him to know; The righteousness by God approved, To us poor sinful Gentiles show; The righteousness that faith imparts, Impute, implant it on our hearts. 3. Not with a loud, uplifted voice Will you compel mankind to hear, With strife and violence, and noise! But when a soul inclines its ear, You will the prostrate sinner raise By the soft whisper of your grace. 4. You will not crush the poor and weak; Your tender heart can never bear A reed already bruised to break, To plunge the fearful in despair, Or aggravate a sinner's load, Or quench the faintest spark of good. 5. Discouraged at our wayward ways, We trust you, that you will not fail, But carry on the work of grace Till mercy over sin prevails, And fix on Earth your righteous throne, And reign in all our hearts alone. 6. Me, me, who still in darkness sits, Shut up in sin and unbelief, Bring forth out of this hellish pit, This dungeon of dispairing grief; Lord, bear the stain of sin away And raise me to eternal day. Shepherd Of Israel, Bow Thine Ear

Author: James Merrick, 1720-1769 Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Shepherd of Israel, bow Thine ear; O Thou, our prayer indulgent hear, Who Joseph’s pasture hast prepared, His guide by day, by night his guard; Betwixt the cherubs seated high; Glad with Thy beams our longing eyes! 2 With all who from Manasses claim Their birth, and all of Ephraim’s name, Each hostile power by Thee o’erthrown, Let Benjamin Thy presence own! How long, great God, shall Israel see Thy wrath, nor bend the stubborn knee? 3 Behold a vine from Egypt’s land, Transplanted by Thy fostering hand. Behold in Canaan’s shores her bed By Thee prepare, her root outspread Far as the utmost coast extends, While o’er the hills her shade extends. 4 Her branches, towering to the skies, With healthful stem conspicuous rise, Round the tall cedar’s loftiest boughs Her covering veil entwined she throws; And, strengthened by Thy power, defies Each storm that rends the wintry skies. 5 Long cherished by Thy care she stood; Here, verging toward th’Assyrian flood, In circuit wide the earth she crowned, And there, the ocean marked her bound. But now, in sad reverse (ah, why?) By Thee o’erthrown the fences lie. 6 The fruit exposed beside the way, To each rapacious band a prey; The savage boar with restless toil Uproots it from the loosened soil, And every monster of the wood Crops from the branch his obvious food. 7 Leader of hosts, and Israel’s Lord! Return; Thy succors oft implored Extend: from Heav’n’s high seat incline Thy eyes, and visit this Thy vine. Turn them again, Thy face display, And grief and fear shall fly away. We, Only We Believe Indeed

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 We, only we believe indeed, Our faith by our obedience show, Who follow, by His Spirit led, And walk as Jesus walked below, And in His ways continue still, And all His words with joy fulfill. 2 Justly we call the Father ours, The Son we really do possess, And tasting the celestial powers Go on in holy love and peace, To meet our Lord from paradise, To claim our mansions in the skies. Merciful God, Vouchsafe To Me

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Merciful God, vouchsafe to me, That last transcendent victory; That crown of all Thy graces give, And bid me in Thine image live, ’Till wholly sanctified I rise, To feast on Christ in paradise. 2 Christ is the Tree of Life divine; I live indeed, if Christ be mine; And when He doth Himself bestow, My God as I am known, I know, And all the life of glory prove, For ever filled with heavenly love.
