As with gladness men of old

Author: William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 661 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold, as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright; so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee. 2 As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour, to thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before thee whom heaven and earth adore; so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy-seat. 3 As they offered gifts most rare at thy cradle rude and bare, so may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin's alloy, all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee our heavenly King. 4 Holy Jesus, every day keep us in the narrow way, and, when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. 5 In the heavenly country bright need they no created light; thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down; there for ever may we sing alleluias to our King. Scripture: Isaiah 60:19-20 Used With Tune: DIX

My God, how wonderful thou art

Author: Frederick William Faber (1814-1863) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 351 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 My God, how wonderful thou art, thy majesty how bright, how beautiful thy mercy-seat in depths of burning light! 2 How dread are thine eternal years, O everlasting Lord, by prostrate spirits day and night incessantly adored! 3 How wonderful, how beautiful, the sight of thee must be, thine endless wisdom, boundless power, and aweful purity! 4 O how I fear thee, living God, with deepest, tenderest fears, and worship thee with trembling hope and penitential tears! 5 Yet I may love thee too, O Lord, almighty as thou art, for thou hast stooped to ask of me the love of my poor heart. 6 No earthly father loves like thee, no mother, e'er so mild, bears and forbears as thou hast done with me, thy sinful child. 7 Father of Jesus, love's reward, what rapture will it be, prostrate before thy throne to lie and gaze and gaze on thee! Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:5 Used With Tune: WESTMINSTER

Through the night of doubt and sorrow

Author: Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924); Bernhard Severin Ingemann (1789-1862) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 327 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 Through the night of doubt and sorrow onward goes the pilgrim band, singing songs of expectation, marching to the promised land. 2 Clear before us through the darkness gleams and burns the guiding light; pilgrim clasps the hand of pilgrim, stepping fearless through the night. 3 One the light of God's own presence o'er his ransomed people shed, chasing far the gloom and terror, brightening all the path we tread: 4 One the object of our journey, one the faith which never tires, one the earnest looking forward, one the hope our God inspires: 5 One the strain that lips of thousands lift as from the heart of one; one the conflict, one the peril, one the march in God begun: 6 One the gladness of rejoicing on the far eternal shore, where the one almighty Father reigns in love for evermore. 7 Onward, therefore, Christian pilgrims, onward with the cross our aid; bear its shame, and fight its battle, till we rest beneath its shade. 8 Soon shall come the great awaking, soon the rending of the tomb; then the scattering of all shadows, and the end of toil and gloom. Scripture: Exodus 14:19-31 Used With Tune: MARCHING

If Christ had not been raised from death

Author: Christopher Idle (b. 1938) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 8 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 If Christ had not been raised from death our faith would be in vain, our preaching but a waste of breath, our sin and guilt remain. But now the Lord is risen indeed; he rules in earth and heaven: his gospel meets a world of need — in Christ we are forgiven. 2 If Christ still lay within the tomb then death would be the end, and we should face our final doom with neither guide nor friend. But now the Saviour is raised up, so when a Christian dies we mourn, yet look to God in hope — in Christ the saints arise! 3 If Christ had not been truly raised his Church would live a lie; his name should nevermore be praised, his words deserve to die. But now our great Redeemer lives; through him we are restored: his word endures, his Church revives in Christ, our risen Lord. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Used With Tune: KINGSFOLD

God is working his purpose out

Author: Arthur Campbell Ainger (1841-1919) Meter: Irregular Appears in 95 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year, God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From utmost east to utmost west, wherever feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, 'Give ear to me, ye continents, ye isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.' 3 What can we do to work God's work, to prosper and increase the love of God in all mankind, the reign of the Prince of peace? What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea? 4 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world; fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 5 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed; vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed; yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Scripture: Isaiah 24:14-16 Used With Tune: BENSON

O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray

Author: William Henry Turton (1856-1938) Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 80 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray that all thy church might be for ever one, grant us at every Eucharist to say with longing heart and soul, 'Thy will be done': O may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 2 For all thy church, O Lord, we intercede; make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, by drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace: thus may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 3 We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, back to the faith which saints believed of old, back to the church which still that faith doth keep: soon may we all one bread, one body be, through this blest sacrament of unity. 4 So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, may we be one with all thy church above, one with thy saints in one unbroken peace, one with thy saints in one unbounded love: more blessèd still, in peace and love to be one with the Trinity in Unity. Scripture: John 10:11-16 Used With Tune: SONG 1
