1915 - 2008 Topics: Invitation to Consecration Author of "So Send I You" in Hymns for the Living Church Edith Margaret Clarkson was a Canadian hymn writer and author, born June 8, 1915, in Melville, Saskatchewan, and long resident in Toronto. Trained as a teacher, she served for decades in public schools while writing hymns and devotional prose marked by doctrinal clarity and poetic restraint. Early texts include “So Send I You” (1937) and “We Come, O Christ, to Thee” (1946); later she contributed widely sung hymns such as “O Father, You Are Sovereign” and “For Your Gift of God the Spirit,” and published numerous books on the Christian life and suffering. Her work—deeply shaped by Reformed conviction—was commissioned and sung in missionary and ecumenical settings worldwide. Clarkson died in 2008, having been named a Fellow of The Hymn Society (1993). Born in VA, he planned to be a doctor, but decided to study music instead. He studied in Boston for four years and also in Leipzig, Germany for four years.. He composed many gospel tunes and edited “The Sceptre” a New York publication. His brothers, Benjamin and Leonard, were also composers. He and Leonard organized a musical instruction system in Richmond, VA, in the 1850s. By 1861, 50 teachers and singing schools were representing them and using their publications. William M. Runyan

1870 - 1957 Topics: Invitation to Consecration Author of "Lord, I Have Shut the Door" in Hymns for the Living Church Showing early musical promise, William Marion Runyan (b. Marion, NY, 1870; d. Pittsburg, KS, 1957) was a substitute church organist by the age of twelve. He became a Methodist minister in 1891 and served several churches in Kansas but turned to evangelism in 1903; he worked for the Central Methodist Conference for the next twenty years. Following that service, Runyan became pastor at the Federated Church at John Brown University, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. Editor of Christian Workers Magazine, he also served the Moody Bible Institute and was an editor for Hope Publishing Company until his retirement in 1948. She attended the Moody Church, pastored for many years by Dr. Harry Ironside. In 1917, Avis Burgeson married Ernest Christiansen who later became a vice president of Moody Bible Institute. She was a modest and retiring woman, and sometimes used pen names: Avis Burgesson, Christian B. Anson and Constance B. Reid. She began writing poems in childhood, and before her death in 1985 had written thousands of them. She died in 1985. NN, Hymnary

Arguably his best known song is “Each Step I Take." Mercer worked for the John T. Benson company from 1951 to 1981 as a music editor. Bryan Jeffery Leech
