Ralph Waldo Emerson

1803 - 1882 Person Name: Ralph Waldon Emerson, 1803-1882 Author of "Not gold, but only men can make" in The Beacon Song and Service book Emerson, Ralph Waldo, son of an Unitarian Minister, was born at Boston, U.S., May 25, 1803. He was educated for the Unitarian Ministry, and acted, 1829-32, as one of their ministers. Ultimately he left the ministry, and devoted himself to lecturing and literature. As a philosopher, essayist, and poet he rose to a distinguished position. He died at Concord, Massachusetts, April 27, 1882. His published works include Poems, 1846; Orations, Lectures, and Addresses, 1844; Representative Men, 1850; English Traits, 1856, &c. His hymns are not numerous. They include:— 1. Out from the heart of nature rolled. The Everlasting Word. This is part of his poem The Problem, published in the Dial, July, 1840; and then in the 1st ed. of his Poems, 1846. It was included in the Hymns of the Spirit, 1864, No. 636; and Martineau's Hymns, &c, 1873, No. 112. 2. We love the venerable house. The House of God. Written in 1833, for the Ordination of the Rev. Chandler Bobbins, who succeeded Emerson as Minister of the Second (Unitarian) Church, Boston. Cross at­tend­ed Phil­lips An­do­ver Academy, Am­herst Coll­ege and the An­do­ver The­o­log­ic­al Sem­in­ary. He pas­tored in Clif­ton­dale, Mass­a­chu­setts (1892-96); Spring­field, Mass­a­chu­setts (1896-1901); at the Old South Church, Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts (1901-12); and Mil­ford, Mass­a­chu­setts (1916-25). 1891 - 1980 Author of "O God of Love, Who Gavest Life" in Hymnal of the Church of God Goodman, E. Urner. (Philadelphia, 1891-1980). Served as Director of United Church Men in the National Council of Churches. Previously National Program Director of the Boy Scouts of America. Graduated from the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy and attended Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ============================= E. Urner Goodman recently retired as Director of United Church Men in the National Council of Churches where he had served since its organization. Previous to that for twenty years he was National Program Director of the Boy Scouts of America. Born in Philadelphia in 1891, he was graduated from the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy and attended Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania. He early identified himself with Christian work and was active in the Men and Religion Forward Movement in his young manhood. Before coming to the National Council of Churches he was active as a Presbyterian layman and helped to organize the National Council of Presbyterian Men. He is the author of the hymn "Christ Calls the Sons of Men," which was introduced during Church Men's Week in 1953. --Fourteen New Rural Hymns, 1955.
