Ronald A. Nelson

Nelson With degrees from St. Olaf College and the University of Wisconsin Madison, Ronald A. Nelson served for 37 years as Director of Music at Westwood Lutheran Church in suburban Minneapolis, where he has been named Cantor Emeritus and now serves as choir member. Since his retirement he devotes his time to composing, guest conducting, and serving as organist for Chapel Services at Becketwood, the Senior Cooperative where he and his wife Betty Lou reside. In 1999, he was one of 50 composers chosen to write music for the "Continental Harmony" project of the American Composers Forum and National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the new millennium. That composition, "Building Bridges," received Honorable Mention in the Waging Peace Through Singing competition of the University of Oregon. For a 2001 Composers Forum "Faith Partners" Commission he wrote music for three Wisconsin parishes of different denominations, and is now doing a second "Faith Partners" for two parishes in Hutchinson, Minnesota. He is the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf College, the F. Melius Christiansen Award from Minnesota ACDA, and the Faithful Servant Award from the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, which last year made available a CD of his compositions. He was assistant curate at St. John the Evangelist, Darlington (1897-1901); domestic chaplain to Francis Paget, Bishop of Oxford (1901-10); assistant curate, Windsor (1907-10); Vicar of Mentmore with Ledburn (1910-12); Rector of Farnham (1913-28); and Canon of Canterbury (1928-43). John Goss

1800 - 1880 Topics: Unity; Unity of Creation Composer of "LAUDA ANIMA (PRAISE MY SOUL)" in Voices United John Goss (b. Fareham, Hampshire, England, 1800; d. London, England, 1880). As a boy Goss was a chorister at the Chapel Royal and later sang in the opera chorus of the Covent Garden Theater. He was a professor of music at the Royal Academy of Music (1827-1874) and organist of St. Paul Cathedral, London (1838-1872); in both positions he exerted significant influence on the reform of British cathedral music. Goss published Parochial Psalmody (1826) and Chants, Ancient and Modern (1841); he edited William Mercer's Church Psalter and Hymn Book (1854). Stephen P. Starke

b. 1955 Topics: Unity and Fellowship Author of "Almighty Lord, How Lovely Is That Place" in Psalms for All Seasons Rev. Stephen P. Starke has always had a heart for hymns. At a young age, Starke played hymns out of The Lutheran Hymnal and read through the hymnal to pass the time before Sunday services. Pastor Starke graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a BA. While completing his MDiv from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, he attempted his first hymn text and was encouraged to write more. Since that time, he has written more than 175 hymns inspired by music and the Scriptures. He has been commissioned to write hymns for special occasions, including the 125th anniversary of Concordia University Wisconsin, as well as his daughter’s wedding. Because of his extensive work as a hymnwriter, Pastor Starke received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Concordia University, Irvine, California, and an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. It is through the medium of hymns that Pastor Starke desires to preserve and pass on the truths of the Gospel for generations to come.

Kurt Kaiser

1934 - 2018 Topics: Unity Arranger of "MANNA" in Baptist Hymnal (1975 ed) Kurt Kaiser was born December 17, 1934, in Chicago. He attended American Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. He moved to Waco, Texas in 1959 in order to join Word Music, where he later worked as vice president and director of music. He arranged and produced several albums. He composed more than 300 songs, and with Ralph Carmichael developed Christian youth musicals. He was a longtime member of the Seventh & James Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. He later helped start Dayspring Baptist Church in Waco. He was an acclaimed pianist who accompanied George Beverly Shea at Billy Graham crusades. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and was elected to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He died November 12, 2018, in Waco. Giovanni G. Gastoldi

1554 - 1609 Person Name: Giovanni Gastoldi Topics: Unity of Humanity Composer of "IN DIR IST FREUDE" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Giovanni G. Gastoldi (b. 1582; d. 1609) served as a deacon and singer in the chapel of the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Succeeding Giaches de Wert, he directed music in the Church of Santa Barbaras in Mantua from 1592 to 1608. Little is known about the rest of his life. Gastoldi composed a considerable body of court music, such as madrigals, and some church music, but he is best known for his Balletti, which influenced composers such as Monteverdi, Hassler, and Morley. George C. Stebbins

1846 - 1945 Person Name: Geo. C. Stebbins Topics: Church Unity of Composer of "[With joy I hear my friends exclaim]" in Bible Songs Stebbins studied music in Buffalo and Rochester, New York, then became a singing teacher. Around 1869, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, to join the Lyon and Healy Music Company. He also became the music director at the First Baptist Church in Chicago. It was in Chicago that he met the leaders in the Gospel music field, such as George Root, Philip Bliss, & Ira Sankey. At age 28, Stebbins moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he became music director at the Claredon Street Baptist Church; the pastor there was Adoniram Gordon. Two years later, Stebbins became music director at Tremont Temple in Boston. Shortly thereafter, he became involved in evangelism campaigns with Moody and others. Civilla D. Martin

1866 - 1948 Person Name: C. Martin Topics: Christian unity Author of "God's Church is one, His blessed Son" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Martin, Civilla Durfee (Jordan Falls, Nova Scotia, August 21, 1866--March 9, 1948, Atlanta, Georgia). Daughter of James N. and Irene (Harding) Holden. She married Rev. John F. Geddes, Congregational minister of Coventryvilee, N.Y. at Jordan Falls Methodist Church, Shelbourne Co., Nova Scotia, on May 19, 1891. There is thus far no information about their marriage and its end. After several years of teaching school, she married Walter Stillman Martin, a Baptist minister, and traveled with him in evangelistic work. However, because of frail health, she was compelled to remain home much of the time. In 1916, they became members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). They had one son, A.G. Martin. In her writing, she used only her initials, "C.D." rather than her full name of that of her composer-husband. She is reputed to have written several hundred hymns and religious songs. Her first one, "God Will Take Care of You," written in 1904 became world-famous. Her husband wrote the music for this and many of her other hymns. "His Eye is on the Sparrow" written in 1906 and set to music by Charles H. Gabriel, has also received wide acclaim. In addition to the above, "Like As A Father," "A Welcome for Me," and "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power" are among her better-known hymns. Her husband and collaborator, W.S. Martin (1862-1935) preceded her in death. For the last 29 years of her life, she made her home in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was a member of the First Christian Church.
