Raise the Psalm: Let Earth Adoring

Author: Edward Churton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 6 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Raise the psalm: let earth adoring, Through each kindred, tribe, and tongue, To her God His praise restoring, Raise the new accordant song. Bless His name, each farthest nation; Sing His praise, His truth display: Tell anew His high salvation, With each new return of day. 2. Tell it out beneath the heaven To each kindred, tribe and tongue, Tell it out from morn till even In your unexhausted song: Tell that God forever reigneth, He, who set the world so fast, He, who still its state sustaineth Till the day of doom to last. 3. Tell them that the day is coming When that righteous doom shall be: Then shall Heav’n new joys illumine, Gladness shine o’er earth and sea. Yea, the far resounding ocean Shall its thousand voices raise, All its waves in glad commotion Chant the fullness of His praise. 4. And earth’s fields, with herbs and flowers, Shall put on their choice array, And in all their leafy bowers Shall the woods keep holy day: When the Judge, to earth descending, Righteous judgment shall ordain, Fraud and wrong shall then have ending, Truth, immortal truth, shall reign. Not Alone for Mighty Empire

Author: William P. Merrill Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 87 hymnals First Line: Not alone for mighty empire, stretching far over land and sea Lyrics: 1. Not alone for mighty empire, stretching far over land and sea, Not alone for bounteous harvests, lift we up our hearts to Thee. Standing in the living present, memory and hope between, Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving, praise Thee more for things unseen. 2. Not for battleships and fortress, not for conquests of the sword, But for conquests of the spirit give we thanks to Thee, O Lord; For the priceless gift of freedom, for the home, the church, the school, For the open door to manhood, in a land the people rule. 3. For the armies of the faithful, souls that passed and left no name; For the glory that illumines patriot lives of deathless fame. For our prophets and apostles, loyal to the living Word, For all heroes of the spirit, give we thanks to Thee, O Lord. 4. God of justice, save the people from the clash of race and creed, From the strife of class and faction, make our nation free indeed; Keep her faith in simple manhood strong as when her life began, Till it find its full fruition in the brotherhood of man! See, the Conqueror Mounts in Triumph

Author: Christopher Wordsworth Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 202 hymnals Lyrics: 1 See, the Conqueror mounts in triumph; See the King in royal state, Riding on the clouds, his chariot, To His heavenly palace gate! Hark! The choirs of angel voices Joyful alleluias sing, And the portals high are lifted To receive their heavenly King. 2 Who is this that comes in glory, With the trump of jubilee? Lord of battles, God of armies, He hath gained the victory. He who on the cross did suffer, He who from the grave arose, He has vanquished sin and Satan; He by death has spoiled His foes. 3 Thou hast raised our human nature On the clouds of God's right hand; There we sit in heavenly places, There with Thee in glory stand. Jesus reigns, adored by angels; Man with God is on the throne, Mighty Lord, in Thine ascension, We by faith behold our own. Amen. Lift the strain of high thanksgiving!

Author: J. Ellerton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 21 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lift the strain of high thanksgiving! Tread with songs the hallowed way! Praise our father's God, for mercies New to us their sons to-day; Here they built for Him a dwelling, Served Him here in ages past, Fixed it for His sure possession, Holy ground, while time shall last. 2 When the years had wrought their changes, He, our own unchanging God, Thought on this His habitation, Looked on His decayed abode; Heard our prayers, and helped our counsels, Blessed the silver and the gold, Till once more His house is standing, Firm and stately as of old. 3 Entering then Thy gates with praises, Lord, be ours Thine Israel's prayer: "Rise into Thy place of resting, Show Thy promised presence there!" Let the gracious word be spoken Here, as once on Sion's height, "This shall be my rest forever, This My dwelling of delight." 4 Fill this latter house with glory Greater than the former knew; Clothe with righteousness Thy priesthood, Guide us all to reverence true; Let Thy Holy One's anointing Here its sevenfold blessing shed; Spread for us the heavenly banquet, Satisfy Thy poor with bread. 5 Praise to Thee, almighty Father, Praise to Thee, eternal Son, Praise to Thee, all-quickening Spirit, Ever blessèd Three in One: Threefold Power and Grace and Wisdom, Molding out of sinful clay, Living stones for that true temple, Which shall never know decay. Amen. Topics: Restoration of a Church Used With Tune: AUSTRIA

When Will People Cease Their Fighting?

Author: Constance Cherry Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 When will people cease their fighting? When will armies wage no war, nations conquer not their neighbour, weapons idle, used no more? When will guns and bombs be silent? When will captives be set free? All creation groans in longing for the world's true liberty. 2 Floods and earthquakes, drought and famine plague the world with awesome ill, but far greater is war's horror caused by human, stubborn will. Blest are those who, working, praying, purpose in their hearts to be instruments of peace, committed to the nations' harmony. 3 As we strive for peace with vigour, hoping to be shown the way, we are strengthened in the knowledge of a future, perfect day; for we know that deeper, richer peace is ours when Christ shall reign: then will all our swords be plowshares and God's children free from pain. Topics: The Church in the World Commitment: Peace and Justice; Commitment; Justice; Peace (World); Weddings Used With Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN
