When Mary Poured a Rich Perfume

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 4 hymnals First Line: When Mary poured a rich perfume ;on Jesus' weary feet Lyrics: When Mary poured a rich perfume on Jesus’ weary feet, Her caring filled that humble room; the fragrance there was sweet. But full of anger, Judas said, “We could have used this more! Why was her gift not sold instead, and given to the poor?” The Lord replied, “Leave her alone! She bought it for this day. This caring love that she has shown is faithful to God’s way. The poor will always be with you, but you will not have me.” He blessed her and he thanked her, too, for giving lavishly. O Christ, what can your people bring to show you thanks and love? You need no fragrant offering; for now you reign above. Since there will never cease to be the poor throughout the land, May we, your church, serve faithfully by offering them our hand. Topics: Jesus Christ Ministry; Justice Scripture: Deuteronomy 15:11 Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE

Stand Up for Jesus

Author: Duffield Appears in 1,870 hymnals First Line: Stand up! stand up for Jesus! Lyrics: 1 Stand up! stand up for Jesus! Ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high his royal banner, It must not suffer loss: From vict'ry unto vict'ry. His army shall he lead. Till ev'ry foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed. 2 Stand up! stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict, In this his glorious day: Ye that are men now serve him, Against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose. 3 Stand up! stand up for Jesus! Stand in his strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you; Ye dare not trust your own: Put on the gospel armor, And, watching unto pray'r, Where duty calls, or danger, Be never wanting there. 4 Stand up! stand up for Jesus! The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle, The next the victor's song: To him that overcometh, A crown of life shall be; He with the King of Glory Shall reign eternally. Bethlehem

Author: Sanford F. Bennett Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: In Bethlehem was Jesus born Lyrics: 1 In Bethlehem was Jesus born, The Son of God Supreme; And wise men from the eastward came, Whose eyes His star had seen. When Herod sent them on their way, Afar to Bethlehem, A light to guide their steps aright, That star preceded them. 2 And as their longing eyes beheld Its clear and gentle rays, How swelled their hearts with untold joy! How warmed their lips with praise! If we so seek to find the way To loving Jesus’ feet, Faith’s guiding star, with gentle light, Our longing eyes shall greet. 3 And we may bear our gifts of gold, And myrrh, and frankincense, The off’rings of a contrite heart, That sinning, yet repents. And He who pities sinful man Those gifts of love shall bear, And place them near the Father’s throne, To be our witness there. Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE Text Sources: The Signet Ring by Joseph P. Webster (Chicago: Lyon & Healy, 1868)

Fill Thou My Life, O Lord, My God

Author: Horatius Bonar Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 101 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Fill Thou, my life, O Lord, my God, In ev'ry part with praise, That my whole being may proclaim Thy being and Thy ways; Not for the lip of praise alone, Nor e'en the praising heart, I ask, but for a life made up Of praise in ev'ry part. 2. Praise in the common words I speak, Life's common looks and tones, In intercouse at hearth or board With my beloved ones,-- Enduring wrong, reproach, or loss With sweet and steadfast will, Loving and blessing those who hate, Returning good for ill. 3. So shall each fear, each fret, each care, Be turned into song, And ev'ry winding of the way The echo shall prolong; So shall no part of day or night From sacredness be free, But all my life, in ev'ry step, Be fellowship with Thee.
