Wake, O wake! With tidings thrilling

Author: Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608); Francis Crawford Burkitt (1864-1935) Meter: 8.9.8.8.9.8.6.6.4.8.8 Appears in 13 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 Wake, O wake! With tidings thrilling the watchmen all the air are filling, arise, Jerusalem, arise! Midnight strikes! No more delaying, 'The hour has come!' we hear them saying, 'where are ye all, ye virgins wise? The Bridegroom comes in sight, raise high your torches bright!' Alleluia! The wedding song swells loud and strong: go forth and join the festal throng. 2 Zion hears the watchmen shouting, her heart leaps up with joy undoubting, she stands and waits with eager eyes; see her Friend from heaven descending, adorned with truth and grace unending! Her light burns clear, her star doth rise. Now come, thou precious Crown, Lord Jesus, God's own Son! Alleluia! Let us prepare to follow there, where in thy supper we may share. 3 Every soul in thee rejoices; from earth and from angelic voices be glory given to thee alone! Now the gates of pearl receive us, thy presence never more shall leave us, we stand with angels round thy throne. Earth cannot give below the bliss thou dost bestow. Alleluia! Grant us to raise, to length of days, the triumph-chorus of thy praise. Scripture: Matthew 25:1-13 Used With Tune: WACHET AUF

I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Appears in 37 hymnals Topics: Future hope Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Luke 2 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

There is an hour of peaceful rest

Author: William Bingham Tappan Appears in 569 hymnals Topics: Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Hope of Resurrection and Future Life; Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Hope of Resurrection and Future Life Lyrics: 1 There is an hour of peaceful rest, To mourning wand’rers giv'n: There is a joy for souls distressed, A balm for ev'ry wounded breast, ’Tis found above in heav'n. 2 There is a soft, a downy bed, 'Tis fair as breath of even; A couch for weary mortals spread, Where they may rest the aching head, And find repose in heaven. 3 There is a home for weary souls, By sin and sorrow driven; When tossed on life’s tempestuous shoals, Where storms arise and ocean rolls, And all is drear but heaven. 4 There, faith lifts up her cheerful eye, To brighter prospects given; And views the tempest passing by, The ev'ning shadows quickly fly, And all serene in heaven. 5 There fragrant flow'rs immortal bloom, And joys supreme are given; There, joys divine disperse the gloom: Beyond the confines of the tomb Appears the dawn of heaven. Used With Tune: TAPPAN

And must this body die?

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 381 hymnals Topics: Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Hope of Resurrection and Future Life; Christian Life and Hope The Consummation: Hope of Resurrection and Future Life Lyrics: 1 And must this body die? This mortal frame decay? And must these active limbs of mine Lie mould'ring in the clay? 2 Corruption, earth, and worms, Shall but refine this flesh, Till my triumphant spirit comes To put it on afresh. 3 God, my Redeemer, lives, And ever, from the skies, Looks down and watches all my dust, Till He shall bid it rise. 4 Arrayed in glorious grace Shall these vile bodies shine, And ev'ry shape, and ev'ry face, Look heav'nly and divine. 5 These lively hopes we owe To Jesus' dying love; We would adore His grace below, And sing His power above. 6 Dear Lord, accept the praise Of these our humble songs, Till tunes of nobler sound we raise With our immortal tongues. Used With Tune: SHAWMUT
