The Hand that Holds Me Steady

Representative Text

1 There’s a hand that safely guides me
Over all the unknown way;
And no matter what betides me,
This, the hand I love today;
There’s a hand that ever holds me,
‘Tis the hand that keeps me true;
‘Tis the nail-pierc’d hand of Jesus,
That was wounded once for you.

Refrain:
There’s a hand that holds me steady,
Wounded once for you and me;
And my heart cries I am ready,
Blessed Lord, to follow Thee.

2 There’s a hand that ever shields me,
When the tempter would alarm;
There’s a hand that ever helps me,
Guarding me from sin and harm;
O the precious hand of Jesus,
That was pierc’d on Calvary;
I will go where’er it leadeth,
With a willing heart, and free. [Refrain]

3 There’s a hand that leads to heaven,
Safely thro’ a world of sin;
‘Tis the hand that over Satan
Shall at last the vict’ry win;
There’s a hand reach’d out to sinners,
In their sin and need today;
There’s a hand that leads them homeward,
Wheresoe’er their feet may stray. [Refrain]

William C. Poole was born and raised on a farm in Maryland. His parents belonged to the Methodist church. He graduated from Washington College and became a Methodist minister in Wilmington, Delaware area. He was pastor of McCabe Memorial, Richardson Park and other churches. In 1913 he was superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Delaware. He wrote about five hundred hymns. The writing was done as recreation and a diversion from his pastoral work. His goal in writing as well as in being a minister was to help people.
