1 Holy Father, cheer our way
with Your love’s perpetual ray;
grant us every closing day
light at evening time.

2 Holy Saviour, calm our fears
when earth’s brightness disappears;
grant us in our latter years
light at evening time.

3 Holy Spirit, from on high
when in mortal pains we lie;
grant us, as we come to die,
light at evening time.

4 Holy God, no dark shall be
round the blessèd Trinity;
those You keep shall always see
light at evening time.

Notes

Written in 1869 for the congregation of St. Paul's, Upper Norwood, where he was curate, to be sung after the third Collect at Evening Prayer. It appeared in the S.P.C.K. Church Hymns, 1871.

Holy Father, cheer our way, p. 969,1. This hymn, as given in Stopford A. Brooke's Christian Hymns, 1881, and Hunter's Hymns of Faith and Life, 1889, is a rewritten form of R. H. Robinson's hymn by Mr. Brooke.
