Hubert P. Main

1839 - 1925 Harmonizer of "BAHAMAS" in The Cyber Hymnal Hubert Platt Main DD USA 1839-1925. Born at Ridgefield, CT, he attended singing school as a teenager. In 1854 he went to New York City and worked as an errand boy in a wallpaper house. The next year he became an errand boy in the Bristow & Morse Piano Company. He was an organist, choir leader, and compiled books of music. He also helped his father edit the “Lute Songbook” by Isaac Woodbury. In 1866 he married Olphelia Louise Degraff, and they had two sons: Lucius, and Hubert. In 1867 he filled a position at William B Bradbury’s publishing house. After Bradbury’s death in 1868 the Bigelow & Main Publishers were formed as its successor. He also worked with his father until his father’s death in 1873. Contributors to their efforts were Fanny Crosby, Ira Sankey, Wilbur Crafts, and others. In addition to publishing, Main wrote 1000+ pieces of music, including part song, singing school songs, Sunday school music, hymns, anthems, etc. He also arranged music and collected music books. He 1891 he sold his collection of over 3500 volumes to the Newberry Library in Chicago, IL, where they were known as the Main Library. Some of his major publications include: “Book of Praise for the Sunday school” (1875), “Little pilgrim songs” (1884), “Hymns of Praise” (`1884), “Gems of song for the Sunday school” (1901), “Quartettes for men’s voices: Sacred & social selections” (1913). In 1922 Hope Publishing Company acquired Bigelow & Main. He was an editor, author, compiler, and composer, as well as publisher. He died in Newark, NJ. John Perry

John M. Evans

Person Name: J. M. Evans Composer of "["Land ahead!" Its fruits are waving]" in Calvary Songs Evans, John M. (Hilltown, Pennsylvania, November 30, 1825--?). Baptist. Appointed superintendent of the Sunday School at Tenth Baptist Church, Philadelphia, in 1854. Under his direction, the Sunday School became the first in that city to make music a prominent feature of its activities. In 1872, he was elected President of the Baptist Sunday School Association of Philadelphia. Author of several hymns and tunes. Included in Devotional Hymn Book (Philadelphia, 1864) is the text "Amid the joyous scenes of earth" which is interesting in that the refrain is the same as the one for the Doddridge text "Oh, happy day, that fixed my choice." --Deborah Carlton Loftis, DNAH Archives

1839 - 1885 Person Name: W. P. MacKay (1839-1885) Author of "When We Reach Our Peaceful Dwelling" in The Believers Hymn Book Mackay, William Paton, M.D., was born at Montrose, May 13, 1839, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. After following his medical profession for a time, he became minister of Prospect Street Presbyterian Church, Hull, in 1868, and died from an accident, at Portree, Aug. 22, 1885. Seventeen of his hymns are in W. Reid's Praise Book, 1872. Of these the best known is "We praise Thee, O God, for the Son of Thy love" (Praise to God), written 1863, recast 1867. [Rev. Mackay graduated from the University of Edinburgh and initially worked as a doctor. However, he was ordained, and in 1868 became pastor of the Prospect Street Presbyterian Church in Hull. He married Mary Loughton Livingstone 1868 in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire; they were living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, as of 1881. Seventeen of his hymns appeared in W. Reid’s Praise Book in 1872. 1824 - 1906 Person Name: Anne Cousin (1824-1906) Author of "When We Reach Our Peaceful Dwelling" in The Believers Hymn Book Cousin, Anne Ross, née Cundell, is the only daughter of David Ross Cundell, M.D., Leith, and is the widow of the Rev. William Cousin, late Minister of the Free Church of Melrose. She has contributed many poems to various periodicals; 7 hymns to The Service of Praise, 1865, edited by the Rev. J. H. Wilson, of Edinburgh; and 1 to the Psalms and Hymns for Divine Worship, 1866, the Hymnal of the English Presbyterian Church. Four of her hymns are included in the Scottish Presbyterian Hymnal, 1876. Her most popular hymn, "The sands of time are sinking," was first published in The Christian Treasury for 1857, and gives its title to the collected edition of her poems published in 1876, as Immanuel’s Land and other Pieces by A. R. C. This is a collection of 107 hymns and poems, many of which are very beautiful. In general they are, however, rather meditations than hymns suited for public worship. Of these the following, in addition to those annotated under their first lines, are in common use:— 1. King Eternal, King Immortal. Christmas. 2. O Christ, what burdens bowed Thy head. Good Friday. 3. To Thee, and to Thy Christ, O God. Praise. 4. To thy father and thy mother. Filial Duty. [Rev. J.
