You'll totter like a bending wall, Or fence of uncemented stone. 3 To make my envy'd honours less, They strive with lees, their chief delight; For they, though with their mouths they bless, In private curse with inward spite. 4 But thou, my soul, on God rely; On him alone thy trust repose: My rock, and health will strength supply, To bear the shock of all my foes. 5 God does his saving health dispense, And flowing blessings daily send; He is my fortress and defence; On him my soul shall still depend. 6 In him, ye people, always trust; Before his throne pour out your hearts: For God, the merciful and just, His timely aid to us imparts. Part II. 7 My spirit looks to God alone; My rock and refuge is his throne: In all my fears, in all my straits, My soul on his salvation waits. 8 Trust him, ye saints, in all your ways, Pour out your hearts before his face: When helpers fail, and foes invade, God is our all-sufficient aid. 9 False are the men of high degree, The baser sort are vanity; Laid in the balance both appear Light as a puff of empty air. 10 Make not increasing gold your trust, Nor set your hearts on glitt'ring dust; Why will you grasp the fleeting smoke, And not believe what God has spoke? 11 Once has his awful voice declar'd, Once and again my ears have heard, "All pow'r is his eternal due;" He must be fear'd and trusted too. 12 For sov'reign pow'r reigns not alone, Grace is a partner on the throne: Thy grace and justice, mighty Lord, Shall well divide our last reward.
