Now rest beneath night's shadows

Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-book #33 (1918) Meter: 7.7 Lyrics: 1 Now rest beneath night's shadows, Man, beast, town, woods and meadows, The world in slumber lies; But thou, my heart, awake thee, To prayer and song betake thee, Let praise to thy Creator rise. 2 O sun, where art thou vanished? The night Thy reign hath banished, The foe of day, the night. Farewell, for now appeareth Another Sun and cheereth My heart--'tis Jesus Christ, my Light! 3 The last faint beam is going, The golden stars are glowing In yonder dark-blue deep; Such is the glory given, When called of God to heaven, On earth no more we pine and weep. 4 To rest my body hasteth, Aside its garments casteth, Types of mortality; These I put off and ponder How Christ shall give me yonder A robe of glorious majesty. 5 Head, hands, and feet reposing Are glad the day is closing, That work came to an end; Cheer up my heart, with gladness! For God from all earth's sadness And from sin's toil relief will send. 6 Ye weary limbs! now rest you, For toil hath sore oppressed you, And quiet sleep ye crave; A sleep shall once o'ertake you From which no man can wake you, In your last narrow bed--the grave. 7 My heavy eyes are closing: When I lie deep reposing, Soul, body, where are ye? To helpless sleep I yield them, O let Thy mercy shield them, Thou sleepless Eye, their Guardian be! 8 Lord Jesus, who dost love me, O spread Thy wings above me, And shield me from alarm! Though Satan would devour me; Let angel-guards sing o'er me: "This child of God shall meet no harm!" 9 My loved ones, rest securely, From every peril surely Our God will guard your heads. May He sweet slumbers send you, And bid His hosts attend you, And, golden-armed, watch o'er your beds! Topics: Evening Languages: English

Now rest beneath night's shadows

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878; P. Gerhardt Hymnal: Hymn Book #88 (1884) Lyrics: 1 Now rest beneath night's shadows Man, beast, wood, town, and meadows, The world in slumber lies. But thou, my heart, awake thee, To fervent prayer betake thee, Let praise to thy Creator rise. 2 O Sun, where art thou vanished! The night thy reign hath banished, The foe of day, dark night. Farewell; a brighter glory My Jesus sheddeth o'er me, He fills my heart with joy and light. 3 The day has now departed, The golden stars have started From out the heaven's blue dome: Thus, thus shall I be standing, When God shall call, commanding To leave this vale of tears and gloom. 4 To rest the body hasteth; Its garments off it casteth-- Types of mortality; These I put off, and ponder How Christ shall give me yonder A robe of glorious majesty 5 Head, hands, feet are contented, For night their work has ended, And bids sweet rest begin. Swell thou, my heart, with gladness; Thou shalt be free from sadness Of earth, and from the toil of sin. 6 Ye weary limbs, now rest you, For toil hath sore oppressed you, And quiet sleep you crave. This day and hour is near you When other hands shall bear you To rest in your last bed, the grave. 7 My heavy eyes are closing, In dreamy sleep reposing, Who shall protect me then? I to thy grace betake me, In danger ne'er forsake me, O Eye that watchest over men! 8 Lord Jesus, Thou dost love me; O spread thy wings above me, And shield me from alarm; When Satan would devour me, Let angels then sing o'er me. "This child of God shall meet no harm!" 9 My loved ones, rest securely, For God this night will surely From perils guard your heads; Sweet slumbers may He send you, And bid His hosts attend you, And golden-armed watch o'er your beds. Now Rest Beneath Night's Shadows

Author: Paul Gerhardt Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #572 (1930) Meter: 7.7.6.7.7.8 Lyrics: 1 Now rest beneath night's shadows The woodlands, fields and meadows, The world in slumber lies; But thou, my soul, awake thee, To song and prayer betake thee, Let praise to thy Creator rise. 2 The radiant sun hath vanished, Its golden rays are banished By night, the foe of day; But Christ, the Sun of gladness, Dispelling all my sadness, Within my heart holds constant sway. 3 The rule of day is over, And shining jewels cover The sky above so blue. Thus I shall shine in heaven, Where crowns of gold are given To all who faithful prove and true. 4 My body lies divested Of garments that have rested Upon this form of clay. But I in rapture ponder How Christ shall clothe me yonder With glory that endures for aye. 5 Lord Jesus, who dost love me, Thy pinions spread above me, And shield me well from harm. Let angel guards attend me And from the foe defend me, That I may rest without alarm. 6 My loved ones, rest securely, For God will keep you surely From pain and perils sore. Sweet slumbers may He send you, And may His hosts defend you With golden weapons evermore. Topics: Evening Languages: English Tune Title: INNSPRUCK
