Mark How the Lamb of God's Self-Offering

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Hymnal: The New Century Hymnal #167 (1995) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Topics: Baptism of Jesus; Year A Baptism of Jesus; Year B Baptism of Jesus; Year C Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 Mark how the Lamb of God’s self-offering our human sinfulness takes on In the birth-waters of the Jordan as Jesus is baptized by John. Hear how the voice from heaven thunders, “Lo, this is my beloved Son.” See how in dove-like form the Spirit descends on God’s Anointed One. 2 From this assurance of God’s favor Jesus goes to the wilderness, There to endure a time of testing that readied him to teach and bless. So we, by water and the Spirit baptized into Christ’s ministry, Are often led to paths of service through mazes of adversity. 3 Grant us, O God, the strength and courage to live the faith our lips declare; Bless us in our baptismal calling; Christ’s royal priesthood help us share. Turn us from every false allegiance, that we may trust in Christ alone: Raise up in us a chosen people transformed by love to be your own. When Jesus Was Baptized by John

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: Faith That Lets Us Sing #88 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Topics: Baptism Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 When Jesus was baptized by John, the sky was torn apart. The Spirit, like a dove, came down and fell upon his heart. As he rose from that desert spring, a voice from heaven cried: “You are my Son, beloved one, my chosen one, my pride.” 2 Thus Jesus heard his call from God and, gifted with God’s grace, began to spread the light of love in every darkened place. He healed the sick, the blind, and lame; the broken, contrite heart. He called for justice for the poor and all those set apart. 3 Like Jesus, we have been baptized, accepted as God’s own, and in that holy sacrament our mission was made known. The Risen Christ lives on in us, his body here on earth, and we are instruments of grace to give God’s love new birth. 4 Each time we gather at the font, remember who we are: a people charged to love and serve our neighbors near and far; a people called to be a friend to all who are in need, and show that love is just and fair in every word and deed. Scripture: Isaiah 42:1 Languages: English Tune Title: JORDAN SPRING

When Jesus came to Jordan

Author: F. Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: Common Praise #93 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Topics: Baptism of Jesus Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon, but as his Father's Son. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss; for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the Dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make, this very day invade us, and every bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. Scripture: Mark 1:14-15 Languages: English Tune Title: OFFERTORIUM
